Recently, a new study in Brazil has updated the health benefits of coffee. Researchers at the University of S ã o Paulo have found that drinking three cups of coffee a day can help reduce the risk of atherosclerosis, which in turn reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke.

The study involved more than 4400 S ã o Paulo citizens with an average age of 50. The researchers divided participants into three groups according to how much coffee they drank each day: less than one cup a day, one to three cups a day, and more than three cups a day. The researchers analyzed and assessed the calcium deposition in the coronary arteries of three groups of people by performing CT scans. If there is excessive calcium deposition on the coronary artery wall, coronary artery calcification will occur, which is one of the manifestations of atherosclerosis. The results showed that the degree of coronary artery calcification was negatively correlated with coffee intake. Specifically, participants who drank three cups a day had a 63% lower risk of coronary artery calcification than two groups of participants who drank less than one cup or one to three cups of coffee a day. The research paper is published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

The researchers said that a comprehensive analysis of other relevant factors found that the above association was only significant in non-smokers. The negative effects of smoking on arteries far outweigh the benefits of coffee, so drinking coffee has no benefit on vascular wall calcium deposition for subjects who have a history of smoking or are smoking. At present, the observational study has not yet determined which ingredients in coffee have the effect of clearing blood vessels to protect the heart, which may be caffeine or the antioxidants contained in coffee. However, experts warn that drinking too much coffee is not good for your health.
