Where does Gesha come from?
It is no accident that those found a cup of Ethiopian coffee during a cup test in the 2004 Panama Best Competition: the Gesha variety originally came from Ethiopia's Gori Gesha forest because Gesha seedlings were originally collected from Ethiopia by British Consul Richard in the 1930s.
Gesha originated in Ethiopia-which is why it reminds us that so much Ethiopian coffee has the delicate scent of jasmine.
The variety finally landed at the Centre for Tropical Agricultural Research and higher Education (CATIE) in Costa Rica in the 1950s, and in the 1960s, government officials from Panama came to CATIE in search of new coffee varieties to try to grow in the country. He returned with some varieties and distributed them to the farm in Boquete-one of which was Hacienda La Esmeralda. Although it took a long time for the Peterson family with Hacienda La Esmeralda to discover the quality of Gesha, the migration of this variety paved the way for later discoveries.
In recent years, there has been renewed interest in starting to produce Gesha in Ethiopia, led by a 475-hectare coffee farm called Gesha Village Coffee Estate, about 12 miles from the Gori Gesha Forest. Gesha Village's owners Adam Overton and Rachel Samuel took part in an expedition to collect seedlings from the forest; they have now grown several versions of Gesha from that expedition with the goal of achieving the highest quality. "Gesha is now known in the industry for its high quality, but Ethiopia is not an important part of its story, even though Gesha originally came from here," Rachel said. "We are pleased to be able to help develop a professional coffee market in the Gesha region so that this magical coffee can eventually appear in its birthplace."
Gesha is often associated with Panama because it became very popular in the Panama Best Panama Competition in 2004. But now many Ethiopian farmers, including Rachel Samuel and Adam Overton in the village of Gesha, are growing their native varieties.
What's the spelling of the name-Gesha or Geisha?
One interesting thing about Gesha is how difficult it is to determine how the "correct" spelling of its name is. Read some articles, look at the coffee bags and literature in the roaster, and you may see how much "Gesha" can be used as a "geisha".
So what is the inconsistency? Gesha is named after a town in southwestern Ethiopia. There is no direct translation from Ethiopian dialect to English, so the Gesha name has always existed. In fact, however, coffee researchers initially called the breed "geisha"-because hearing the name prompted them to use the spelling they knew, which was used by Japanese artists.
Gesha is a breed that does not have the same spelling, but we will celebrate the birth of the town with "Gesha".
As a result, the coffee industry uses Gesha and Geisha interchangeably. Gesha is probably the more technically correct spelling, as well as the one that will be used in this series.
