"after the silent coffee shop opened in May this year, many people came to sign in." The manager of the Starbucks sign language store in Wende Square in Wende Road told reporters that guests often order a cup of coffee to encourage hearing-impaired clerks.

It is understood that preparations for the sign language store began in February this year, when Zhu Jieying, a hearing impaired clerk who had worked at Starbucks for many years, came here from other stores. After targeted recruitment from the hearing impaired, 13 of the 23 shop assistants here are now hearing impaired.

Compared with ordinary coffee shops, the biggest obstacle for clerks is to communicate with customers. To this end, the coffee shop has specially set up a new barrier-free ordering system for hearing-impaired staff, such as through touch-screen devices, customers and hearing-impaired baristas to achieve smooth communication and barrier-free communication. The order desk is specially equipped with a handwriting board for communication, a hand-held menu board, a single-sided double-sided display screen and a vibrating catering machine, together with a unique catering number. Customers can write the number on the paper menu or handwriting board to complete the order. When the drink is ready, the pickup will vibrate to prompt the customer to pick up the meal.

The store also designed sign language recognition brooches for hearing impaired partners, and there were corresponding sign language gestures on the shop assistants' aprons. The store has also carefully set up weekly sign language teaching boards to introduce simple sign language knowledge such as "thank you", "integration" and "coffee". Regular sign language classes and coffee classrooms are organized and held in cooperation with the Guangdong Association of the Deaf. to enhance understanding and integration between different communities.

This sign language coffee shop has attracted the attention of the disabled Persons' Federation. The person in charge of the disabled Persons' Federation of Yuexiu District said that the proportion of disabled and able-bodied employees in the store is 1.3, which belongs to the over-proportional placement of disabled persons (the policy stipulates that the proportion is 1.5%). The store has played a benchmark and exemplary role in creating a social atmosphere of equality and integration.
