Historically, coffee has been one of Honduras's main exports (alongside bananas), and the total annual production of coffee has grown by leaps and bounds since the mid-2000s. In the 2009 crop year, Honduras produced about 3.6 million bags of Arabica coffee (much more than in 1999). By 2014 / 2015, the country had become the largest grower in Central America (seventh in the world), producing more than 5 million bags (all Arabica grape varieties). China has the highest per capita output in the world, and various commercial drivers are promoting the development of the plastic bag industry. Experts agree that it is not surprising that the number of plastic bags in China will reach 8 million in the foreseeable future. All in all, the story is clear: Honduras is a big coffee producer with many untapped specialty coffee producing areas.
