Coffee plays a leading role in the lives of the Ugandan people and has made a significant contribution to the country's economy. Nearly 42 per cent of farmers (1.7 million households, or 21 per cent of the population) grow coffee, which has contributed an average of 30 per cent of the country's foreign exchange earnings over the past 20 years. The Government of Uganda believes that coffee is a strategic commodity and development should be accelerated to increase agricultural production and productivity. Uganda has good coffee growing conditions in terms of altitude, climate, rainfall and soil. Due to equatorial conditions, coffee is available all the year round. However, many areas are faced with the problem of soil fertility decline. Over the next 25 years, the effects of climate change pose a real threat, with rising temperatures and more frequent extreme weather events such as floods and droughts. This may affect the prevalence of pests and diseases.
