The famous raw bean competition and auction project excellent cup came to the birthplace of coffee for the first time: Ethiopia.
Over the past 19 years, the CoE Cup project-which includes rigorous multiple rounds of reviews of coffee before the final score and an auction project-has raised more than $60 million in auction revenue for individual farmers, mainly small farmers.
The CoE organizer Coffee Excellence Alliance (ACE) found that the past successful introduction of CoE programs to Rwanda and Burundi, as well as at least nine Latin American countries, did not take place in Ethiopia, a well-known coffee producer that promised competition and wealth to provide high-quality coffee. The first Ethiopian demonstration center will be completed in 2020 next year.
Darrin Daniel, executive director of ACE, said in a recent joint statement: "nearly 20 years after we were founded, it has always been our dream to bring excellence awards to the birthplace of coffee." "Ethiopia is a typical specialty coffee producer, and our project is carried out in Ethiopia, and we hope to further identify and reward small farmers who need to enter the market through our competition and auction."
2019 has proved to be a landmark year for the ACE and CoE projects, which are celebrating their 20th anniversary. In addition to Ethiopia's statement, the group made some major changes to CoE rules and regulations aimed at expanding auction revenues and announced plans to launch in Indonesia, another well-known birthplace.
Ethiopian CoE is achieved through cooperation between ACE, the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority and the United States Agency for International Development's meeting Future Ethiopian value chain activities (FTFE-VCA). The USAID project, the second year of its five-year plan, aims to establish a more robust and sustainable agricultural system that benefits smallholder farmers in Ethiopia.
"Trading companies, cooperatives and coffee unions across the country are rapidly and actively involved," said Ian Chesterman, director of the FTFE-VCA project. "giving priority to open cooperation between the private sector and the public sector from the outset will help ensure that competition benefits all stakeholders, especially our smallholder customers."
ACE and the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority will hold an official signing ceremony at the SCA Expo in Boston this week. The signing ceremony will be held on Friday, April 12, at 2 p.m., in the Ethiopian Lounge (Room 256) of the Boston Convention Center, followed by a question-and-answer session attended by leaders of both parties.
