Mundo Novo

A plant with exuberant growth, high yield and good quality, but is easily affected by major diseases. Widely grown in South America, but rarely in Central America and the Caribbean.

Mundo Novo is the result of a natural cross between bourbon and a typical variety found in Mineiros do Tiete, Sao Paulo, Brazil. The original coffee tree seeds were planted in the city of Novo Mundo, today known as Urupes, where the selection produced the Mundo Novo variety. The variety was discovered in 1943.

The first mineral processing of Mondonovo in Brazil was completed between 1943 and 1952. The variety has been distributed to Brazilian farmers since 1952. Since 1977, IAC has released a new selection in Brazil. The variety is of commercial importance in Brazil and South American countries, including Peru, but is rarely used in Central America. It first entered Costa Rica in 1952, although it was not widely adopted because farmers did not like its very high decrees. Between 1963 and 1964, there were several introductions to Guatemala. It was introduced to Honduras from CATIE in 1974. It is also found in Malawi in Africa.

The characteristic of this plant is that it grows tall. It is a traditional American type variety, but it matures later. Its leaf tip can be green or bronze.

The cross between Mondonovo and the dwarf Katula gave rise to the dwarf Katui.
