Jin Junmei is a unique black tea. It comes from Tongmu Village in Wuyishan Nature Reserve. The amount of tea that can be grown here is limited by the terrain and the fact that the area is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tongmu is also a traditional producer of smoked Zhengshan small black tea, but the production of this old-fashioned tea has now been replaced by the more profitable Jinjunmei tea.

Zhengshan race has long been considered a low-grade tea in China, while Jin Junmei is now considered one of the most expensive teas in the world. Jin Junmei does not use coarse ripe leaves, but carefully selected leaf buds (no pine smoke) to make a naturally sweet and delicate black tea. It is said to have been commissioned as a gift by a tung wood tea master in 2006, and the new high-quality tea has been warmly welcomed at tea tasting homes in China.

Wuyi Mountain, where Jin Junmei grew, is famous for its rocky peaks.

The recent development of this style leaves little room for vague interpretations of authenticity, as the originals still hold an important place in the market. The price of authentic gold eyebrows is astronomical, while imitations from neighboring farms and regions flood the market at lower and lower prices. As always, true quality is difficult to determine, as the taste of this refined black tea relies on exquisite craftsmanship and the unique soil of the region. Even authentic paulownia leaves may produce very different results due to different techniques or harvest dates. In the end, individual tastes and brewing styles dictate the "best" examples.

Golden eyebrows are often described as fruity and floral with chocolate and a full-bodied body. Many examples are fussy and may produce bitterness when steeped too long. While we like complex flavors, we always like tea that tastes good no matter how brewed, so this rare tea isn't the tea we'd normally put on our shelves.

Young leaf buds like these can produce China's most prized green, white and black teas.

Instead, we opted for similar sharp black teas, such as the first Golden Monkey from Wuyi Mountain, whose buds are small and firm and do not have bitterness no matter how long they are brewed. We also treasure rare and unique teas such as our Lishan Red, Honey Fragrance, an unexpected treasure of black tea from Taiwanese oolong tea farmers with incredible caramel and roasted fruit flavours. We think these tasty alternatives are just as tasty and frankly more fun than the mainstream.

I have told you so much about Jin Junmei Black Tea. Have you ever drunk Jin Junmei Black Tea?
