Coffee trees are easily affected by many different pests and diseases, the two most common of which are leaf rust (leaf rust) and coffee fruit coffeeberry borer (CBB).

Leaf rust

Known as roya in many Latin countries, it is a disease caused by a fungus called Hemileia vastatrix, which causes orange damage on the leaves, reduces photosynthesis and falls, and may eventually kill the entire coffee tree. Leaf rust first appeared in the literature of East Africa in 1861, but its causes and control methods had not been studied until the disease caused near-extinction damage in Sri Lanka from 1869 to 1879. Leaf rust spread to Brazil in 1970, possibly through merchant ships carrying cocoa beans from East Africa, and has since spread rapidly to Central America. Today, leaf rust can be said to spread to all coffee-producing countries in the world, and the epidemic has been exacerbated by the warming caused by global climate change. In 2013, many Central American coffee-producing countries indicated that coffee production had entered a state of emergency because of the serious damage caused by leaf rust.

Coffee fruit cuttlefish

Known as Broca in Latin-speaking countries, the Hypothen-emus Hampei lays eggs in the fruit of coffee, which is eaten by the newly hatched beetle, thus reducing not only the overall yield of coffee, but also the quality of coffee. Coffee fruits native to Africa have been found in coffee producing countries all over the world, and many control methods have been developed, including chemical pesticide traps and microbial control methods.
