What Is Fair Trade Coffee and Why It Matters

Every time you sip a cup of coffee, you might unknowingly contribute to the ongoing economic struggle of coffee farmers in Africa and South America. The global coffee supply chain is built on extreme price volatility, and while consumers pay premium prices, many growers earn less than $0.50 an hour. A 2006 documentary, Black Gold, exposes this harsh reality with stark footage: Ethiopian farmers asking for a mere $0.60 per kilo to fund their children’s schooling, while corporate executives negotiate trade deals behind closed doors and global coffee brands ignore pleas for fairness.
