What coffee producing areas are there in southwestern Ethiopia? What are the characteristics of Kafa Forest?
Coffee is not suitable for growing in all parts of the world. Coffee trees are suitable for growing in the tropics or subtropics, requiring a humid and warm climate, plenty of sunshine and proper rainfall. The equatorial zone between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Cancer is very suitable for coffee growth, so this area is called the "coffee belt".
Among them, the area of Africa is between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Cancer, so the average annual climate in most parts of Africa is more than 20 ℃, and the climate is generally warm, which is known as the "tropical continent". In addition, the African continent is rich in natural resources, vast and abundant, mainly composed of plateaus, with an average elevation of 750 meters, and has many volcanoes, rivers and lakes. Therefore, Africa's agriculture is developed, and many countries are famous for exporting coffee, including Ethiopia, which is the largest Arabica coffee producer in Africa, and Ethiopia is recognized as the birthplace of coffee. It is well known in the global coffee market.
Ethiopia is located in East Africa, mainly a mountainous plateau, most of which belongs to the Ethiopian plateau, and is run through the whole territory by the East African Rift Valley, which is lined with mountains, volcanoes and rivers with an average elevation of nearly 3000 meters. Thanks to the higher altitude, even in the tropics, the climate is comfortable and pleasant, with an average annual temperature of 16 ℃ and a large temperature difference between day and night. The whole year is roughly divided into dry season and rainy season. Sitting on many volcanoes, rich water resources and high altitude, it is very suitable for growing and growing coffee.
At present, Ethiopia is divided into 12 states, 2 autonomous new government regions and 10 coffee producing areas, including many world-famous coffee producing areas, such as Sidamo, Jima, Haller, Kaffa, Guji and Yirgacheffe, among which Guji and Yegashafi originally belonged to Sidamo, but became an independent coffee producing area because of their unique flavor.
Yirgacheffe is a small town in West Damas. in addition to the small town of Yegashefi, the coffee producing area also includes the town of Wenago, which is about 26 kilometers north of the town, and the sub-producing areas such as Kochere and Gedeb, which are located in the south of the town. The rugged and complex terrain of the region, with Lake Abaya (Abaya) to the west, is rich in water resources, humid climate, abundant rainfall, coffee cultivation at an altitude of 1750-2200 meters, fertile land and ample sunlight, making the area very suitable for coffee cultivation.
In the Qianjie coffee rations bean series, also includes Ethiopia this well-known producing area Yega Xuefei coffee beans, using the original species (Heirloom), the use of washing treatment, floral flavor, citrus, berry flavor, lemon-like acidity, refreshing taste.
In addition, Ethiopia is recognized as the birthplace of coffee, which was first found in the Kaffa Zone region of southwestern Ethiopia, where countless Arabica coffee mother trees still grow.
According to historical records, the name Kaffa comes from the Kingdom of Kaffa, an ancient kingdom in the history of the region, but it is now written as "Kafa" or "Kefa" in some areas, which was annexed by the Ethiopian Empire at the end of the 19th century and is now part of Ethiopia.
Today, the Kafa region is part of the southwestern people's State of Ethiopia (South West Ethiopia Peoples' Region, a former southern nation state that was separated by a referendum in 2021), in the north of the state. The Kafa area is mainly a humid and humid rainforest zone, best known as the Kafa Biosphere Reserve (Kafa Biosphere Reserve).
The southern part of the Kafa Biosphere Reserve (Kafa Biosphere Reserve) is surrounded by the Banga National Forest Reserve (Bonga National Forest Priority Area), the east extends to Adiyo Woreda County (Adiyo Woreda) and the north of the Gojib River (Gojeb River) is surrounded by the Gwatta-Yaba (Bojinda) National Forest Reserve (Gewata-Yeba (Boginda) National Forest Priority Area), and to the west is the Gesha National Forest Reserve, where the Rosa species originated.
The Kafa Biosphere Reserve covers an area of about 760144 hectares, contains more than 50 per cent of Ethiopian mountain forests, has more than 5000 coffee tree species, and is the center of origin and genetic diversity of wild Arabica coffee. Here is mainly the production of wild coffee, coffee grows on the hillside of 1400-2100 meters above sea level, and there are many trees to provide shade environment, the original ecological environment, microclimate and abundant rainfall provide a good growing environment for coffee. At present, about 30 coffee producers' cooperatives have been established around the Kafa Nature Reserve to harvest coffee berries in the forest area at maturity and sell them after treatment.
At present, in Qianjie Coffee, there is a kind of washed coffee beans from Ethiopia's Kafa Forest, which is roasted in medium and shallow. After brewing, it will have a faint white flower aroma, and the entrance will have bright lemon acid, sweet orange and bergamot flavor.
