What is a TOH competition? What is AFCA?
Ethiopia is currently the largest coffee producer in Africa and is recognized as the birthplace of coffee. Thanks to Ethiopia's rich natural resources, the coffee produced is deeply loved by many coffee lovers for its unique floral and citrus flavor. When it comes to what the Ethiopian sun-dried coffee beans represent, many people think of "Sakuran".
"Sakui" (because its full name is Ethiopia Guji Hambella Buku Abel, Chinese coffee traders named it Sakui) refers to a sun-dried coffee bean processed and produced by the Buku Abel processing plant in the Esselguji Humbera region. At present, in Qianjie Coffee, it has come to "Huakui 8.0". After brewing, it has tropical fruit flavors such as dried mango, citrus and jackfruit, full of juice, round taste, sweet like black tea, and rich in layers.
The coffee bean became famous in 2017 when the Ethiopian DW Coffee Company selected "Zakui" coffee beans to participate in the TOH raw bean competition and won the championship in the tanning group for its rich berry aroma and creamy texture.
So what is this TOH competition that makes Sakuran famous? In fact, the TOH (Taste of Harvest) competition is also known as the harvest season flavor contest, which is similar to the world-famous COE (Cup Of Excellence, COE) Excellence Cup competition, but the TOH competition is a raw bean competition organized by the African Fine Coffee Association (African Fine Coffees Association, referred to as AFCA).
The African Fine Coffee Association (AFCA) is a membership-based non-profit association established in July 2000, mainly representing coffee producers, traders, governments and other support organizations. The AFCF is currently composed of 11 member states, including Burundi, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia.
At the beginning of each year, AFCA will hold the harvest season flavor competition TOH, which is the annual coffee quality competition held by AFCA members. However, TOH will first distinguish between the National Division (NATIONAL) and the African Regional final (REGIONAL). Since some countries grow both Arabica and Robsta coffee varieties, both varieties will hold national competitions. In addition, Arabica varieties will also distinguish between washing group, sun group and honey treatment group.
The winners of the national competitions will be able to represent countries in the African regional finals held at annual African boutique coffee conferences and exhibitions (which are hosted by member States on a rotating basis). Therefore, all the samples were graded using the Fine Coffee Association (SCA) scoring system and cup test, and the experienced and certified panel of judges selected the top five Arabica varieties treatment groups and Robusta coffee groups.
AFCA holds the season Flavor Competition TOH Competition to promote the best coffee from all over Africa. The award-winning coffee from each country is displayed at African boutique coffee conferences and exhibitions, as well as at international trade shows and other coffee events. The aim is to help African coffee-producing countries develop coffee trade, improve coffee quality and attract the attention and purchase of international buyers.
At the beginning of this year, the African boutique coffee association AFCA, in cooperation with the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority, held the 2024 seasonal Flavor Competition TOH in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
