In the coffee bean list of front street coffee, there is the name "big belly button" in the Columbia column. I believe many people will find it interesting and curious and ask what kind of coffee a big belly button is. Why is it called a big belly button?

In fact, the large belly button (Ombligon) is a relatively new Arabica variety, although it is still not clear where the variety originated, but according to local farmers, it is an Ethiopian variety. At present, only the Huilan producing area (Huila) in southwestern Colombia has a large navel variety.

The shape of this variety of coffee is very characteristic, with large grains and similar to papaya, with a protruding bottom and a small circle, which looks like a "belly button", so local coffee farmers call it Ombligon, a Spanish word that translates to "belly navel".

The fame of the big belly button is similar to that of the claw, and it is well known through the competition. Jack Simpson, a contestant from Australia, won the third place in the 2023 World Barista Competition by virtue of his belly navel variety.

Later, according to the genetic test of the large belly button variety conducted by the World Coffee Institute, the variety is related to the Ethiopian native variety, so it is considered to be a variety formed by natural mutation after the Ethiopian native species came to Colombia. but there is no way to find out how to get to Colombia.

But at the same time, growers found that the navel was very similar to the common Kaddura variety in Colombia, with broad leaves, denser coffee fruits, vertical branches, high yield characteristics and high resistance to leaf rust. Because of these characteristics, it is very popular with local farmers. In addition, after the planting experiment of local farmers, it was found that the flavor effect of belly button planted between 1600 and 1800 meters above sea level was the best.

At present, Qianjie Coffee also has a large belly navel variety of coffee beans, while the coffee beans come from Columbia's dividing Line Manor (Finca El Diviso). The dividing Line Manor was founded by Jose Uribe Lasso in 1996 and is now run by Jose's grandson Nestor Lasson and his brothers.

Since Nestor Lasson took over, efforts have been made to cultivate some of the rarer coffee beans, such as claw and belly button, which are on sale on the front street, as well as pink Pink bourbon, Papayo, Chiroso and Bourbon Aji.

The dividing line estate is located in Pitalito, the town of Pitalito in Huilan producing area, covering an area of 15 hectares, which can be said to be the core area of Colombian coffee. The area is surrounded by mountains, coffee is grown on slopes more than 1500 meters above sea level, and nearby the famous Huila volcano and Magdalena River River provide the area with mineral-rich volcanic soil and water resources, so the coffee produced here is famous for its high quality.

This belly navel coffee bean is treated with double anaerobic treatment. After brewing, it will smell slightly fermented wine, with blackcurrant, grapefruit-like acidity, berry and orange flavor, pineapple juice as a whole, soft taste and rich layers.
