A French study reported that daily caffeine consumption of more than 408 mg (equivalent to 3 cups of coffee ≥ per day) in patients with chronic hepatitis C is associated with lower histological disease activity, and caffeine may have a hepatoprotective effect on patients with chronic liver disease. The paper was published in the Journal of Hepatology [J Hepatol 2011 054 (6): 1123].

The study included 238 patients with chronic hepatitis C confirmed by histology. The inflammatory activity grade and fibrosis stage of liver histology were scored by Metavir system. The patients were divided into 4 groups according to their daily caffeine consumption during the 6 months before liver biopsy: group 1 (678 mg/d,60 cases). The proportion equivalent to drinking coffee A2 per day was 78%, 61%, 52% and 48%, respectively (PA2 risk reduction [OR = 0.32, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.12-0.85], however, caffeine consumption had nothing to do with the stage of liver fibrosis.
