American Cancer Society: coffee reduces the risk of recurrence in patients with breast cancer after cure
A study by Clinical Cancer Research, a journal of the American Cancer Society, shows that drinking just two cups of coffee a day can inhibit tumor growth and reduce the risk of tumor recurrence in women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and treated with the antiestrogen drug tamoxifen.

In 2013, Clinical Cancer Research, a journal of the American Cancer Society, published a study by researchers at Lund University in Sweden that investigated the relationship between cancer recurrence and coffee intake in 300 patients who took the breast cancer drug tamoxifen, but the researchers could not explain why coffee prevented breast cancer recurrence in these women.
Recently, 1090 breast cancer patients at Lund University and SkaneSkane University Hospital wrote again in the Clinical Cancer Research journal that breast cancer patients who drank more than two cups of coffee a day halved their risk of cancer recurrence.
Breast cancer is the second largest cancer in American women after skin cancer. There is one breast cancer patient in every eight women, and it is also one of the three most common cancers for women in China.
In general, estrogen therapy is the most common treatment for breast cancer, and tamoxifen is used to treat advanced breast and ovarian cancer. In clinical treatment of breast cancer, the effective rate is generally 30%. The curative effect of estrogen receptor positive patients is better (49%), and that of negative patients is poor (7%).
In the study, 1090 women with breast cancer took tamoxifen (Tamoxifen). The subjects were divided into three groups: low coffee consumers (less than 1 cup per day), normal consumers (2-4 cups per day), and high coffee consumers (5 cups or more per day). The researchers found that normal consumers and high-dose coffee consumers had a half lower recurrence rate of breast cancer than those who did not drink coffee or drank a low dose of coffee daily.
The researchers believe that caffeine and caffeic acid in coffee bring about these effects. Breast cancer cells respond to caffeine, which, when combined with moxifen, reduces cell division and promotes cell death. The effect of these substances on breast cancer cells can turn off the signaling pathways that cancer cells need to grow.
The team believes that caffeine can enhance the efficacy of tamoxifen, but it also emphasizes the need for patients to be treated with appropriate prescription drugs. The effect of medication is extremely important, but if you are also a coffee lover and do not need to change your coffee drinking habits, 2 cups of coffee a day is enough to bring benefits.
Preventing breast cancer recurrence is not the only benefit of coffee: caffeinated drinks are generally rich in antioxidants and may even help prevent diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. But keep in mind that this does not mean that coffee is good for us. Eating too much coffee can also lower your blood pressure.
