The Two Main Types of Coffee Beans
When you buy coffee from a café or grocery shelf, you’re almost always choosing between two plant species — and that choice shapes everything from flavor to caffeine kick. But what really separates them? Most drinkers have no idea what ‘Arabica’ or ‘Robusta’ actually means for their daily cup.
The coffee you drink comes from either the Arabica or Robusta species. Around 70% of global coffee production is Arabica, prized for aroma and lower caffeine. Robusta makes up 20–30%, with harsher taste and double the caffeine. These two species define nearly all commercial coffee on the market.
What Are the Most Common Coffee Drink Types?
Coffee culture has evolved into a wide range of preparation styles, each altering flavor and body. Here’s how the core commercial styles break down, with classic ratios and methods:
- Black Coffee – Coffee brewed directly from roasted beans, served without milk or sugar to preserve pure flavor.
- White Coffee – Black coffee with added milk, softening acidity and rounding body.
- Espresso – Italian-style shot made by forcing hot water (90–96°C) through finely-ground coffee under high pressure (9 bar). Yields a thick, concentrated brew with crema.
- Cappuccino – Equal parts espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam (1:1:1), often dusted with cinnamon or cocoa.
- Latte – One shot of espresso with two or more parts hot steamed milk, creating a creamy, mild coffee drink.
- Flavored Coffee – Black or espresso coffee mixed with additives such as chocolate syrup, fruit flavors, spices (cinnamon, nutmeg), or citrus (orange blossom).
- Mocha – Espresso with chocolate syrup or powder, steamed milk, and sometimes whipped cream or ice.
- Americano – Espresso diluted with hot water, resulting in a milder, larger-format coffee similar to drip.
- Irish Coffee – Coffee mixed with Irish whiskey and topped with cream.
- Vietnamese Coffee – Brewed using a small metal drip filter (phin) over a single serving; served hot or iced with sweetened condensed milk or sugar.
What’s the Difference Between Arabica and Robusta Coffee Beans?
Nearly every coffee bean on the commercial market belongs to one of two botanical species — and their differences go far beyond name.
Arabica (Coffee Arabica) accounts for roughly 70% of the world’s coffee supply. These beans are grown primarily in Central and South America at higher altitudes — typically on sloped land between 800 and 2,000 meters. Arabica plants are more delicate, requiring precise climate conditions. The beans are known for complex aromas, bright acidity, and a smoother, sweeter taste profile. They also contain about half the caffeine of Robusta. Due to these traits, Arabica commands a premium price and is the base for most specialty and single-origin coffees. Arabica is more vulnerable to pests and disease, which contributes to its higher farming costs.
Robusta (Coffee Robusta) makes up an estimated 20–30% of global production. These beans thrive at lower elevations, usually between 200 and 300 meters above sea level, and are much hardier — resistant to pests, diseases, and harsh weather. The flavor is markedly different: Robusta offers a stronger, harsher bitterness with earthy or rubbery undertones, less acidity, and a heavier body. Its hallmark trait is a caffeine content nearly double that of Arabica (around 2.7% versus 1.5%), which acts as a natural pest deterrent. Because of its strong, bitter taste and high caffeine, Robusta is commonly used in instant coffee, espresso blends (for crema and body), and lower-cost commercial products. It is rarely sold as single-origin.
Popular Arabica Coffee Varieties You Can Actually Buy
Within the Arabica species, distinct varieties offer unique flavor experiences based on terroir and processing. Here are a few notable examples:
- Yirgacheffe (Ethiopia): A celebrated Ethiopian origin known for vibrant acidity, floral aromas (like jasmine), and citrus notes such as orange and grapefruit. These beans typically present a tea-like body and are often enjoyed as washed single origins.
- Typica (Jamaica Blue Mountain No.1): One of the oldest Arabica cultivars, grown in Jamaica’s Blue Mountains under ideal conditions — high elevation, volcanic soil, and consistent rainfall. FrontStreet’s version is medium to dark roasted, offering a balanced profile of chocolate, almond, and cream with a refined, elegant finish.
- Geisha (Panama): Originally from Ethiopia but made famous in Panama, Geisha (or Gesha) is now a luxury variety. When expertly grown and processed, it shows intense stone fruit, jasmine, and tropical notes. FrontStreet’s Strawberry Candy Espresso (a Geisha-based blend) highlights ripe berries, stone fruit, and candy-like sweetness with layered complexity.
- Yellow Bourbon (Brazil Queen Manor): A rare mutation of Bourbon with yellow fruit at maturity instead of red. Grown at higher altitudes in Brazil, it develops pronounced sweetness and body. Expect flavors of peanut butter, caramel, and toffee with a smooth, rounded mouthfeel.
