Coffee can kill damaged cells and reduce the risk of skin cancer, according to a study published by US researchers on Aug. 15, French media reported. Proper intake of caffeine or its use in skin care can help prevent and treat non-melanoma skin cancer.

Previous studies have shown that drinking a cup of coffee a day inhibits antithrombin receptor protein (ATR) and promotes the death of cells damaged by ultraviolet rays.

In the new study, two groups of mice were exposed to ultraviolet rays under the same conditions, and the ATR of one group was suppressed. The study found that this group of mice developed the disease three weeks later than normal mice. After 19 weeks of the experiment, the tumor cells were 69% less than the normal mice, and the diffuse tumors were also 1/5 of those in the normal group.

Allen, one of the researchers, said the next step would be to study whether caffeine has an anticancer effect on people.

Data from the National Cancer Institute show that skin cancer is the most prevalent cancer in the United States, with more than 1 million new cases each year, of which non-melanoma skin cancer is the most common and can be cured if detected early.
