Cholelithiasis is a common disease in the middle-aged and elderly, mainly due to the decrease of gallbladder contractility, delayed bile emptying, excessive cholesterol in bile, cholesterol crystallization and precipitation into stone. Gallstones in the early stage usually have no obvious symptoms, only do not like greasy, when the occurrence of stone incarceration will cause severe abdominal pain, radiation to the right shoulder and back, but also accompanied by nausea, vomiting, serious can also cause gallbladder perforation, and even life-threatening. Recently, a study in the United States found that drinking coffee regularly can effectively prevent gallstones.

The researchers followed 46000 volunteers aged 40 to 75 (none of whom had a history of gallstones) and found that 10 years later, those who drank 2 to 3 cups of coffee a day were 40% less likely to develop gallstones, while those who drank more than 4 cups of coffee a day were 45% less likely to develop gallstones. The researchers believe that the chlorogenic acid components in coffee and the lactone components produced during baking can enhance liver-gallbladder-intestinal activity, promote bile secretion, help bile secretion into the gallbladder and intestinal tract, prevent bile from flowing in a normal way, ensure good intestinal work, avoid cholestasis, speed up lipid metabolism, and prevent cholesterol from rising, thus preventing gallstones. However, this effect is limited to caffeinated coffee, while other caffeinated drinks such as tea do not, which may be related to their low caffeine content. In view of the exciting role of coffee, it is recommended that the elderly drink in the morning or noon, drink 1 to 2 cups a day, the concentration is not too high, so as not to affect sleep at night.
