However, the British "Daily Mail" recently revealed that the hidden high sugar content in famous coffee has made many people discouraged from coffee. Starbucks coffee contains more sugar than the WHO warning line.

It's not pleasant to have a cup of strong coffee on a cold winter day. However, the Daily Mail recently revealed that the high sugar content hidden in famous coffee has deterred many people from coffee.

World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that adult men eat no more than 35 grams of sugar a day and no more than 25 grams for women. But COSTA's large full-fat toffee latte contains as much as 73.3g of sugar, three times the daily sugar intake recommended by World Health Organization (WHO), the Daily Mail reported. Starbucks, another coffee giant, is not optimistic either, with its large eggnog latte containing 58.2 grams of sugar, twice the recommended intake for women.

Beijing News reporter referred to the reported sugar content data of COSTA and Starbucks large cups of coffee, and collected three kinds of instant coffee labeled carbohydrates for evaluation, weighing the corresponding white granulated sugar, intuitively showing their sugar content. According to further calculation, it was found that the sugar content of the five types of coffee mixed with 500ml of coffee according to the recommended amount of coffee exceeded World Health Organization (WHO) 's recommended daily sugar intake for women.

Visit

Instant coffee generally contains more than 40% sugar.

A reporter from the Beijing News visited the supermarket and checked the outer packaging of instant coffee and found that many instant coffee contained more than 40% of the total carbohydrates.

In the Lotte Matt Chongwenmen store, a German Grant Berem black coffee has a carbohydrate content of 47%; "Maxwell" chocolate-flavored instant coffee accounts for 69% of carbohydrates; Jiangsu Moka Food Company produces mocha Mantenin instant coffee with a carbohydrate content as high as 75%.

Zhu Yi, an associate professor at the School of Food Science and Nutrition Engineering at China Agricultural University [Weibo], told the Beijing News that carbohydrates are usually about the same as sugar. If the intake of sugar is too much, the human heart will be overloaded, and even cause dessert syndrome, resulting in a decline in human immunity and metabolic dysfunction.

In fact, as early as 2012, domestic media commissioned professional testing agencies to test the sugar content of 30 kinds of best-selling foods on the market, and found that the food with the highest sugar content per unit was the office drink three-in-one instant coffee, which contained 48.6 grams of sucrose per 100 grams of coffee, accounting for almost half of the total.

To this end, the Beijing News reporter decided to refer to the relevant sugar content data, said that the amount of white sugar, intuitively show the sugar content in coffee, and calculate whether the sugar content in 500ml (large cup) instant coffee exceeds the standard.

Experiment.

Experimental purpose:

The sugar content of each brand of coffee was presented with white granulated sugar, and whether the sugar content in 500ml (large cup) instant coffee exceeded the standard was calculated.

Experimental sample

One large cup of coffee from Starbucks and one from COSTA; the instant coffee made by Jiangsu Mocha Food Company, the instant coffee made by Maxwell from Yizi Guangtong Food (Guangzhou) Co., Ltd., and the Yibao white coffee from Taiwan.

Experiment time: November 26

Venue: green Squirrel Laboratory

The process of the experiment:

1. Make coffee: according to the experimental data reported by the Daily Mail, COSTA's large full-fat toffee latte contains 73.3g sugar and weighs the corresponding 73.3g white granulated sugar into a uniform food bag. Starbucks large eggnog latte contains 58.2 grams of sugar. According to the above steps, 58.2 grams of sugar are weighed and bagged to more intuitively show the sugar content of coffee mentioned in the report.

2. Instant coffee: a small bag of "Maxwell" instant coffee is unpacked and weighed, with a net weight of 13 grams. The carbohydrates on the nutritional composition table of the package are shown as 9 grams, and 9 grams of white granulated sugar are weighed into the food bag. Repeat this experimental step, the net weight of Ji Yihao white coffee is 17 grams, the corresponding white granulated sugar is 15 grams, the net weight of mocha Mankning instant coffee is 13 grams, and the corresponding white granulated sugar is 11.2 grams.

3. Finally: convert one by one according to the large cup 500ml coffee solution.

Experimental results

All five kinds of coffee exceed women's sugar intake.

After measurement and calculation, the liquid volume of large Starbucks coffee is about 425ml, the sugar content of 500ml Starbucks eggnog latte is about 62 grams, and the sugar content of 500ml COSTA full-fat toffee latte is 73.3g.

According to the amount of 10ml water per gram of instant coffee, the carbohydrate content of a cup of 500ml Taiwan Di Yihao three-in-one Ipoh White Coffee is 44.1g; the carbohydrate content of 500ml "mocha" Mantenin instant coffee is 43g; and the carbohydrate content of 500ml's "Maxwell" chocolate-flavored instant coffee is 34.6g.

According to World Health Organization (WHO) 's suggestion, adult men should not eat more than 35 grams of sugar a day and women should not eat more than 25 grams a day. If they were all consumed in the amount of 500ml, the sugar content of these five types of coffee exceeded the daily sugar intake of women recommended by World Health Organization (WHO), while in addition to "Maxwell" chocolate-flavored instant coffee, the other four kinds of coffee also exceeded the daily sugar intake of adult men.

Respond

You can choose coffee with sugar.

Faced with the high sugar content in coffee, Foley, a spokesman for the British Citizen Obesity Forum, told the Daily Mail: "the amount of fat and sugar is appalling. These companies should be more responsible. "

Beijing News reporter learned that the reported COSTA full-fat toffee latte and Starbucks eggnog latte are not currently on sale in the Chinese market.

In the face of doubts, Su Bo, head of COSTA's northern China market media, told the Beijing News that according to Chinese consumers' taste for sweetness, the sweetness of COSTA's blended coffee sold in China is 10% lower than that of its stores in Europe and the United States, while the tastes of northern and southern China are also different. The sweetness of COSTA's coffee sold in northern China is also lower than that in the southern market, which means that the coffee contains less sugar.

A reporter from the Beijing News visited the COSTA store in Chongwenmen Guorui City, Beijing, and found that white granulated sugar and healthy sugar were placed in the customer-taken area. The same service can be found in Starbucks stores. The main ingredients of healthy sugar are lactose and the sweetener aspartame, does this mean healthier? Zhu Yi, an associate professor at the School of Food Science and Nutrition Engineering at China Agricultural University, believes that lactose has much less calories than granulated sugar, and the sweetener aspartame itself contains no calories. However, she cautioned that even if sweeteners are used instead of sugar, if you eat too much food, you may not be able to lose weight.

Support and move

Black coffee without sugar and milk is more suitable.

Although high sugar content makes coffee a health threat, Zhu Yi believes that you don't have to pay special attention to drinking a cup of coffee with high sugar content once in a while. Only eating high-sugar coffee every day will do harm to your health.

In addition, not all coffee is bad for your health. Guo Qiang, secretary general of Qingdao Beverage Association, said, "from a health point of view, it is recommended to drink black coffee without milk and sugar, and black coffee can also have the effect of burning fat." And drink some milk to supplement calcium after drinking black coffee, because black coffee can cause calcium loss.
