Historical Origin of Yunnan Coffee

1887

After the end of the Sino-French War, France signed a treaty with the Qing government, designating Mengzi in Yunnan as the trading port. This was the earliest trading port in Yunnan and soon attracted foreign businessmen. Foreign firms from France, Britain, the United States, Japan, Italy, Germany and Greece landed here one after another. it even included the famous American Mobil, British American Tobacco and Paris department stores at that time.

1892

Tian Deneng, a French missionary, came to Zhukula Village in Binchuan, Dali for missionary activities. The first coffee seed took root in Zhukula. The missionaries did as the Romans did, and built a church of local architectural style, which still stands in the center of the village and becomes a landmark.

1903

In order to better plunder the wealth of this red land, the Qing government was forced to agree to build a railway from the coastal port of French Vietnam to Kunming, Yunnan. A large number of foreign engineers, technicians and westerners who came to Yunnan to search for gold poured into Yunnan, and the coffee culture that prevailed in the West at that time also came along.

1905

The French opened Yunnan's first coffee bar in Mengzi, the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway Bar (a French-style cafe, a mixture of cafes and taverns, and the mainstream model of European cafes).

1910

The Yunnan-Vietnam railway was completed on April 1, and then coffee was planted along the railway from 1912 to 1915, and a small number of coffee trees remain today.

1914

The border people of Jingpo nationality were introduced and planted in Nongxian Village, Ruili County, and the purpose of the introduction was to be cultivated as a courtyard for viewing. (however, some scholars believe that the earliest coffee introduction in Nongxian Village was introduced by missionary Irving Hansen in 1893.)

Industrialized cultivation of Yunnan Coffee

1952

In the Mangshi branch of the Yunnan Agricultural Experimental site, the scientific and technological personnel (now the Institute of Tropical and Subtropical Economic crops of Yunnan Agricultural University) brought more than 70 kilograms of fresh fruit from Nongxian Village to Lujiangba, Baoshan City, and found that they had good adaptability and many results. good quality, and thus continue to develop and grow.

China and Soviet Union

In the friendly era, Baoshan coffee ushered in an opportunity for great development. Starting from the national economic strategic development goal of supplying coffee exclusively to the Soviet Union and Eastern European socialist fraternal countries, coffee was planted widely on a large scale, with an area of more than 30,000 mu at one time. As a result, Baoshan has become the earliest area of coffee industrialization in Yunnan Province.

1960

After the 20th century, Sino-Soviet relations broke down, and 4000 mu of coffee plantations in Yunnan were gradually shelved or replanted with other crops.

1980s

In order to reduce the influence of coffee planting bases in South America on coffee prices, international coffee enterprises have turned their attention to Yunnan. At the same time, due to the stimulation of multinational groups, the coffee planting industry in Yunnan was finally revived.

Subsequent

For more than 20 years, Yunnan has gradually become a coffee raw material supply place in the international market. Multinational enterprises buy Yunnan coffee raw materials at lower prices than New York coffee futures, and control the right to export Yunnan coffee raw materials. And only the price of Yunnan coffee is lower than that of New York futures and has been maintained for 27 years. Based on the average annual output of Yunnan coffee in the past 27 years, Yunnan coffee farmers have lost at least 3.4 billion yuan over the past 27 years.

1995

Xiong Xiangren, chairman of Hougu Coffee, started his business from 5 mu of coffee in Dehong.

2008

Hougu Coffee announced the purchase price of fresh coffee fruit for the first time, setting off a "battle for raw materials" to ensure the actual interests of Yunnan farmers. And the introduction of advanced technology and equipment from Denmark and Germany, the development and construction of instant coffee production line, breaking the pattern of Yunnan coffee industry only for the export of raw materials, but also opened a new door for the interests of farmers.

2014

The total import and export volume of Hougu coffee has exceeded 200 million US dollars. Products are exported to Germany, Britain, Spain, South Korea, Singapore, Japan, the United States and so on more than 42 countries and regions. And signed a long-term supply agreement with China Eastern Airlines Co., Ltd. And Japan UCC Group.

2015

Full of hope, the "Yunnan New Europe" and "Chongqing New Europe" post-valley coffee international freight train was officially launched. Yunnan coffee products will arrive in Europe through international railway transportation for the first time, and Yunnan coffee industry begins to develop from agricultural raw material export to coffee industry product export, which fills the gap that there is no land passage in Yunnan-European trade and freight transportation.
