Most Monsarot farmers, who grow coffee on a fairly small scale in the southwestern province of Colombia, see coffee as a staple crop in exchange for cash. A few years ago, the local Grupo Asociativo Productores del Nuevo Milenio was formed, dedicated to improving coffee quality and hoping to sell green beans at higher prices. In addition, in 2005, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) launched the Colombia Fine Coffee Project, which introduced American fine green bean traders to cooperate with the Millennium Agricultural Association. They sent people to Montsarot to participate in coffee production, and knew that farmers improved their planting techniques and produced better quality coffee. In the fine coffee market, they also provided advice on how to position and market.

At present, the New Millennium Farmers Association has 42 members and can produce about three containers (about 825 bags) of green coffee beans per year. In order to improve quality, the New Millennium Farmers Association continues to recruit new members in Montserrat, hoping to expand production. In addition, with the help of USAID and American traders, they set up a cup testing laboratory in the area to teach farmers how to test the cup, hoping that farmers can judge the quality of coffee through cup testing, and thus help coffee production.
