Coffee powder instant coffee five American caffeine powders are said to be at fatal risk
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning letter to five pure caffeine powder dealers on the 1st of this month, saying these products pose health risks and even lead to death, time magazine reported.
The move also reflects that relevant US agencies are beginning to pay attention to the intake of such "stimulants" by citizens and curb the supply of pure raw materials, the report said.
According to reports, the five companies that received the warning letters are: PureBulk, SPN, Kreativ Health, Hard Eight Nutrition and Bridge City Bulk. FDA says the dealers sell pure caffeine powder as a dietary supplement.
FDA said the risk does exist and warnings are needed to prevent deaths caused by powdered caffeine. It is reported that a teaspoon of powdered caffeine contains about the same amount of caffeine as 28 cups of coffee. Because powdered caffeine has always been sold as a health product, it is not regulated like traditional medicine, and it is cheap and easy to buy.
Some drinks often contain small safe doses of caffeine, such as coffee, carbonated drinks and energy drinks. Common mild side effects caused by high caffeine intake include nervous tension and tremors. Consuming large doses of pure powder caffeine can lead to arrhythmias, seizures and death. In 2014, two healthy young men died after consuming powdered caffeine.
FDA said it was continuing to monitor the market for powdered caffeine products and would take immediate action if any violations were found, including taking products off shelves or ordering manufacturers to stop production.
According to the Associated Press, the heads of four companies responded to the warning letters issued by the Food and Drug Administration. The chairman of Kreativ Health said it would remove caffeine powder from the market, while Hard Eight Nutrition said in an email in response to FDA's warning letter that the company would stop selling caffeine powder to consumers.
