Dutch study shows that drinking coffee increases the risk of stroke
Sina Health News according to the Daily Telegraph of May 6, Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association published a new Dutch study finding that daily activities such as drinking coffee, having too much sex and blowing your nose may lead to cerebral vascular rupture and cause a stroke. Anger or shock in patients with aneurysms can also lead to a sudden increase in the risk of stroke.
Researchers at the University of Utrecht Medical Center in the Netherlands surveyed 250 stroke patients about their pre-stroke activities and their usual frequency of such activities. It was found that eight factors increased the risk of stroke, with coffee drinking, intensive exercise, blowing your nose and sex life among the top four risks, which increased stroke risk by 10.6%, 7.9%, 5.4% and 4.3%, respectively. The other four major stroke factors were: excessive defecation (3.6%), drinking cola (3.5%), being frightened (2.7%) and angry (1.3%).
Monique H. M. Flack, who led the new study, said that all of these stroke triggers a short-term surge in blood pressure, causing a ruptured vein tumor. She suggests that drinking less caffeine or using laxatives to treat constipation can help reduce the risk of ruptured venous tumors. However, patients should not completely avoid exercise, because moderate intensity, less aggressive exercise has heart-beneficial and other health benefits.
Dr. Sharin Umid, an expert from the American Stroke Association, said that a brain aneurysm is a ticking time bomb and that its outbreak leads to a sudden and asymptomatic hemorrhagic stroke. A sudden rise in blood pressure does increase the risk of subarachnoid hemorrhage (subarachnoid hemorrhage,SAH). (Chen Zonglun)
