A study published in the journal Journal ofHepatology in June 2017 showed that regular consumption of coffee and herbal tea could reduce liver cirrhosis.

Volunteers who participated in the trial received transient elastography (transientelastography) and ultrasound examination of the liver, and completed a dietary questionnaire. Coffee and tea were divided into three groups: no drinking group, medium frequency (0-3 cups / day) group and high frequency (≥ 3 cups / day) group. Tea drinking is subdivided into green tea group, black tea group and herbal tea (herbal tea) group. Liver fibrosis is defined as liver cirrhosis measurement (LSM) ≥ 8.0kPa.

A total of 2424 volunteers took part in the trial, with an average age of 66.5 years, 43% male, 5.2% LSM ≥ 8.0kPa and 34.6% liver steatosis.

The proportion of LSM ≥ 8.0kPa in three groups of coffee drinkers was 7.8% in the non-drinking group, 6.9% in the medium frequency group and 4.1% in the high frequency group (P trend = 0.006). The same conclusion was obtained in multivariate regression analysis (P = 0.001). In the analysis of tea drinkers, only those who drank herbal tea (36.3%) reached the same conclusion.

Researchers believe that regular consumption of coffee and herbal tea can reduce liver cirrhosis, but not steatosis.
