Marubeni, a large Japanese trading house, recently signed a cooperation agreement with China Pacific Coffee and is expected to sell a 40 per cent stake in its subsidiary AROMA Coffee Shanghai to Pacific Coffee of China Resources Group this year. In the future, Marubeni will be responsible for supplying beans to Pacific Coffee and will also sell AROM-branded coffee in more than 5000 small chain stores of China Resources Group in China.
Pacific Coffee currently has about 500 stores in China, second only to Starbucks. After the cooperation, Pacific Coffee will adopt a franchise approach and plans to double the total number of stores within a few years.
Marubeni currently has its own coffee bean roasting plant in Shanghai, and after partnering with Pacific Coffee, it will set up additional roasting plants in Beijing and Guangzhou, and plans to quintuple the current annual sales of 700 tons of coffee beans within three years. Once realized, its share will leap to the top of China's domestic market.
Marubeni said that coffee sales in China are currently about 100000 tons a year, which has increased sharply in recent years. Marubeni currently accounts for about 30% of the Japanese coffee bean market, and through this cooperation, it is hoped to bring Japanese-style baking technology to China to meet the fast-growing market demand. Marubeni official said: "China's coffee market will also usher in an era of relying on taste to win." I hope AROMA can become the number one coffee company in China. "
