Coffee is native to Ethiopia in north-central Africa. It is located in the tropical rain forest of 6-9 °N latitude, 34-40 °Tokyo, 1300-1900 m above sea level, 1600-2000 mm rainfall and an average annual temperature of 20 ℃. Coffee has specific requirements for environmental conditions, like calm wind, cool, shady or semi-shaded environment.

The planting type of coffee in Yunnan is small seed coffee (coffea arabica L.). In China, the main provinces suitable for growing this coffee are Yunnan, Hainan and Guangdong, but by the end of 2009, there was no coffee planting in Guangdong. Hainan has only 2600 mu of planting area, with an output of 440t. Yunnan is currently the largest coffee bean production base in China, accounting for more than 98% of the original coffee beans produced in China.

This variety has higher requirements for planting conditions, generally located in the south of the Tropic of Cancer, but also in some suitable planting areas in the north, and the altitude should be between 800 and 1200 meters above sea level. It can also be planted below 800 meters, and the ideal planting should be between 800 meters and 1200 meters. The annual average temperature is 17 ℃, and the plots with extreme minimum temperature not less than 0 ℃ are the planting standard. Generally, the elevation increases by 100m and the temperature drops by 0.65 ℃. Small seed coffee (coffea arabica L.) is a shallow root plant, which requires fertile and loose soil, good drainage, groundwater level below 1 meter, pH 5.5-6.5. it can not be planted less than 4.5 or more than 7.8. Choose the north slope or shady slope where the temperature is high, and the south slope or sunny slope where the temperature is lower. Generally, the temperature of the coffee garden should not exceed 25 degrees; the requirement for rainfall is sufficient rainfall, the annual rainfall is more than 1000 mm, and the annual distribution is more uniform.

In Yunnan Province, bounded by Ailao Mountain, east of Ailao Mountain, including Pu'er, Honghe, Wenshan, Yuxi, Xishuangbanna, etc., the elevation is suitable below 900m; to the west of Ailao Mountain, including Lincang, Baoshan, Dehong, Nujiang and back hot area wetlands, the elevation should be less than 1200 meters, and some plots can reach 1500 meters above sea level. Yunnan's high-quality geographical and climatic conditions provide good conditions for coffee growth. The planting areas are Lincang, Baoshan, Simao, Xishuangbanna, Dehong and other prefectures. The natural conditions of Yunnan are very similar to those of Colombia, that is, low latitude, high altitude and large temperature difference between day and night. The small grain coffee produced is mellow by cup quality analysis, and its quality and taste is similar to that of Colombian coffee.
