Burmese Coffee Forgotten Mountain Ruby
When it comes to coffee, the first thing that comes to mind is the world's largest coffee producing area: Central and South America. However, there is still a place that almost disappeared from the world coffee map, and that is Myanmar. Burmese coffee actually has a history of more than 200 years, but because of the policy of isolation, the quality of coffee has plummeted and has been cut down as weeds. But in fact Myanmar is a perfect place to grow coffee. The latitude and longitude, the temperature difference between day and night in the mountains, the undeveloped excellent land, and the excellent natural conditions make the coffee beans sweet and fresh and rich in layers.
Myanmar is one of the few countries where premium coffee beans are cultivated and harvested. Over the past few years, Myanmar has exported more and more coffee beans and now has a reputation for producing high-quality coffee.
According to figures released by the Ministry of Trade, Myanmar exported a total of 1137 tons of coffee beans in 2015 - 16, more than double the amount exported in 2011 - 12.
Burmese coffee is now exported to the United States, Europe, Japan, Korea, Thailand, China and China Taiwan. Although Hawaii grows its own coffee, the United States remains a major coffee importer and has been an important market for Myanmar. New markets for Burmese coffee have also emerged this year-the UK, Australia and Iceland.
U Ye Myint said; Right now, we have a lot of coffee markets. So when the market competition is fierce, we need to grasp wisely. We need to develop coffee into an important export crop, and we can also produce coffee systematically according to market demand. And only private companies can do that. We need government involvement in schemes such as public-private partnerships.
Myanmar Vice President U Henry Van Thio said at the Coffee Forum in Naypyidaw in May that coffee is the second largest petroleum product on the international commodity market. Coffee is one of the high-value crops of Myanmar's agricultural products, thus allowing more foreign exchange to be obtained, helping to narrow the country's trade deficit, he added.
Moreover, the international coffee market is much larger than Myanmar's largest export rice. Most of the demand will come from the United States. "Consumption in the U.S. is high, and currently Hawaiian coffee farmers have no protection from coffee exports and imports. As a result, the United States could become a lucrative coffee market for Myanmar." U Ye Myint said.
According to the Myanmar Coffee Association, 10 20-foot containers filled with coffee beans were exported in 2016-17-17, and 2 20-foot containers contained 2000 tons of coffee, all of which were shipped to the United States.
We attended the American Coffee Show and Burmese coffee received great feedback and interest. So we have to take advantage of that demand,"U Ye Myint said.
According to the Myanmar Coffee Association, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation currently expects to grow coffee on 200,000 acres of coffee plantations between 2018 and 2020, hoping to produce up to 60,000 tons by 2030. Domestic coffee production will average about 2000 tons this year.
