Batian(released late 2010) is named after the highest peak of Mount Kenya.
In Kenya, breeding efforts specifically for coffee disease resistance began in 1971, following outbreaks of coffee berry disease and coffee leaf rust in the 1960s. Since then, the main goal of breeding has been to develop disease-resistant varieties that improve yield and coffee quality. In 1985, a disease-resistant hybrid variety Ruiru 11 was introduced. Further research and development by the Kenya Coffee Research Institute (CRI) culminated in the release of Batian.
Batian is slowly becoming more widespread in Kenya due to its resistance to coffee berry disease and coffee leaf rust, as well as its good cup quality (the variety has been backcrossed with SL28 and SL34). Trees are produced the following year, bringing additional benefits to producers. As of the 2016/17 harvest season, most smallholder farmers have only one or two crops in production, but with CRI's aggressive seed promotion and cooperatives showing significant absorptive capacity, Batian is likely to bloom throughout Kenya soon. One challenge is the plant's vital vegetative growth, which requires specific pruning methods and frequent treatments to keep it at peak production. Training will therefore be an important component of the plant's success.
