The new study, presented on Aug. 27 at the European College of Cardiology (European Society of Cardiology Congress 2021), examined the coffee drinking behavior of 468000 people in the British Biological sample Bank study (UK Biobank Study). The participants recruited in the study showed no signs of heart disease, with an average age of 56.2years and 55.8 per cent of women.

Participants were divided into three groups according to their usual coffee intake: no drinking (22.1%), mild to moderate (0.5-3 cups / day, 58.4%) and high (more than 3 cups / day, 19.5%).
The results showed that among people with undiagnosed heart disease, compared with those who did not drink coffee, people who drank coffee from mild to moderate levels had a 12% lower risk of all-cause death, a 17% lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease, and a 21% lower risk of stroke.

To study the underlying mechanisms, the researchers analyzed the relationship between daily coffee intake and heart structure and function during an average of 11 years of follow-up. To do so, they used data from 30650 participants who underwent cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Study author Dr. Judit Simon (Dr. Judit Simon) also said: "Imaging analysis shows that people who drink coffee every day have a healthier heart and better function than those who do not drink coffee regularly."
Dr. Simon also concluded: "the results show that drinking more than three cups of coffee a day is associated with good cardiovascular health, although further research is needed to explain the underlying mechanism. but the observed benefits may be partly explained by positive changes in the structure and function of the heart."
