On the planting History of Coffee in Taiwan
Taiwan has a history of growing coffee for more than a century, and it is also the earliest place in China to grow coffee. The first coffee tree was successfully planted in Taiwan Province in 1884. Since then, there have been coffee trees in China.
At present, in addition to growing coffee in Taiwan, it also includes Yunnan, Hainan and other places, of which Yunnan is the main coffee producing area in China.
The earliest coffee planting record in Taiwan is that Deji Foreign Company, a British businessman during the Qing Dynasty, introduced Arabica coffee varieties from Manila in 1884 and planted them in the seamounts area of present-day New Taipei City and Wenshan District of Taipei City. However, because of a fire in the middle, these coffee trees were burned out, and the transplanted coffee trees could not adapt to the climate and environment of Taiwan. So Deji finally gave up the cultivation of coffee.
The real large-scale cultivation of coffee was in the 1930s during the Japanese rule, when the Japanese set up agricultural institutions in Hengchun, Chiayi and Shilin to actively introduce and cultivate coffee, and coffee gradually became an important special cash crop.
After World War II, Taiwan's coffee industry was hit hard.
It was not until 2000 that Taiwan coffee began to recover gradually.
