The year in which Iced Black Tea appeared and the historical story Iced Black Tea's recipe guide to how to make it delicious.
American iced tea
Americans consume more than 2.2 billion gallons of tea a year, about 80 per cent (about 1.75 billion gallons) of which is iced tea, according to the USDA. This is nearly 6.5 gallons of iced tea per person! Iced "sweet tea" has been consumed in the south for more than 100 years, but with the rise of fast food restaurants (almost all fast food restaurants sell iced tea), tea consumption in the United States has doubled in the past 30 years.
Iced black tea was most likely introduced to the United States by tea merchant Richard Brackendon at the St. Louis World Exposition in 1904. The exhibition was held on a sultry summer day, and it was difficult for Brackendon to sell Indian black tea to the attendees. So the enterprising businessman and his staff developed a device in which brewed Indian tea could flow through ice-lead pipes, creating a frozen drink and a successful day for Brackenden!
Although iced black tea was officially launched in 1904, Americans had enjoyed iced black tea for at least 100 years before the World Expo. In the United States, the first iced tea was made from a mixture of green tea, sugar, sweet cream and white wine, wine or champagne. A tea drink first appeared in a cookbook called "Kentucky Housewives" published in 1839. Like Tea Boxing, the classic Southern Sweet Tea dates back to the World Expo in 1904. The first sweet tea recipe was published by Marion Cabertelli in 1879 called housekeeping in Old Virginia. It needs green tea, sugar and lemon. In 1884, Mrs. Lincoln published a cookbook called Iced Tea or Russian Tea in Boston, which first mentioned the use of black tea to make sweet tea. At that time, Russians did not like to drink iced tea, but they mainly drank hot black tea, so "Russian" may mean using black tea instead of green tea in this recipe.
