Food giant Nestl é issued a statement on Oct. 4 to launch the Nestle Coffee 2030 initiative, according to Interface News. The statement promised that by 2030, the brand would invest more than 1 billion Swiss francs in the Nestle coffee program to ensure coffee supply and expand its sustainable development efforts. Nestl é is working with coffee growers to help them make the transition to renewable agriculture while accelerating its decade of work under the Nestle Coffee Program.
Nestl é's financing for recycled agriculture is supported by Nestl é's ambitious goal of accelerating the transition to a recycled food system and achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions. To this end, the brand intends to help farmers plant more than 20 million trees on or near their coffee farms to absorb carbon. It is reported that the investment is more than double the amount invested in the past decade, as climate change is posing threats and pressures on coffee growing areas.
It is understood that this investment will be based on the existing Nestle coffee plan. In 2010, Nestl é launched the Nestle Coffee Initiative, an initiative designed to create value for all stakeholders in the coffee supply chain, from coffee farmers to consumers to Nestle. The plan includes a series of goals to optimize Nestl é's coffee supply chain. In addition to the 200 million Swiss francs invested in the past decade, Nestl é will invest another 500 million Swiss francs in its coffee project by 2020.
Nestl é had previously pledged to purchase all coffee in a sustainable manner by 2025. The company now aims to grow 20% of its coffee in "recycled" agriculture by 2025. Nestl é said in a statement that it would support "farmers who bear risks and costs in the transition to renewable agriculture" and help them raise their incomes.
While the global demand for coffee continues to rise, other crops are also competing with coffee for limited arable land. This means that farmers face serious challenges in terms of profitability and the impact of climate change in coffee-growing areas around the world. Nestl é spares no effort to continuously improve the green coffee supply chain and improve the sustainability of each cup of coffee.
According to a coffee report published last year, the coffee industry is worth $200 billion to $250 billion a year at the retail level, but producing countries earn less than 10% from exporting coffee beans, and farmers get even less. According to the non-profit organizations Fairtrade and Technoserve, about 125 million people worldwide depend on coffee for a living, while an estimated 80 per cent of coffee growers live at or below the poverty line.
Nestle is the largest coffee brand and one of the most popular coffee in the world. Founded by Henry Nestl é in 1867, Nestl é originated from Wei Wei, on the shores of Lake Geneva, Switzerland, and has more than 500 factories around the world. is a world-renowned food and beverage manufacturer. It started with the production of baby food and is famous for producing chocolate bars and instant coffee.
Philipp Navratil, head of the strategic business unit of Nestle Coffee, said: "as the world's leading coffee brand, Nestle Coffee aims to have a real impact on the global coffee industry. We want coffee growers to flourish, and we also want coffee to have a positive impact on the environment. Our actions can help drive change in the entire coffee industry."
Support the transition of growers to recycled coffee, a method of cultivation that uses some of the self-healing and resilience that exists in nature, mainly to improve soil health and fertility while protecting water resources and biodiversity. Healthier soils are more resilient to the effects of climate change, increase yields and help improve farmers' livelihoods. Nestle Coffee provides growers with training, technical assistance and high-yielding coffee plants to help them transition to recycled coffee cultivation.
Moving forward on a solid basis, today's announcement is based on Nestl é's sustainable development efforts in the field of coffee production. With the significant progress made by the brand in investing in sustainable development through NESCAF Plan since 2010, this plan will lead to rapid growth.
