According to the Global Times, Reuters reported on Sept. 18 that Starbucks faces a lawsuit accusing Starbucks of misleading consumers that several of its fruit drinks lack actual fruit ingredients.

In August last year, two plaintiffs from New York and California filed a lawsuit accusing Starbucks of violating several state consumer protection laws, raising prices under misleading product names and demanding compensation of at least $5 million, the report said. The reason is that Starbucks' mango dragon fruit, mango dragon fruit lemonade, pineapple passion fruit and other beverage products do not contain the fruit advertised, the main ingredients are water, concentrated grape juice and sugar.

When the news came back to China, netizens had different opinions. Some netizens believe that the discrepancy between the name and the actual raw material is not uncommon, and it is difficult to use it as the source of accusation. after all, "there is no fish in Yu-Shiang Shredded Pork." Netizens commented: "there is no wife like the old lady cake", "the rice is shivering" and "there are no crabs in the crab stick. Can you tell me?"

In response, Starbucks argues that the product name describes flavor, not beverage composition, and that questions from consumers can be answered by in-store employees. The court rejected Starbucks' request to withdraw the lawsuit on Sept. 18, arguing that the name of its drink named after ingredients would convince most consumers that the drink contained real fruit.

However, the judge also found that there was no evidence that Starbucks intended to deceive consumers, so he rejected the plaintiffs' claims for fraud and unjust profits. The judge accepted nine other claims about whether fruit drinks misled consumers. The judge held that it was normal for consumers to be confused because other Starbucks products, such as iced matcha lattes and honey citrus mint tea, do contain matcha, honey and mint.

Another netizen pointed out that this incident reflects Starbucks' awareness of risk aversion or its deficiency: "Starbucks can still make this mistake. Generally speaking, if there is no such ingredient and only flavor, it will be called'xx flavor product'. Be sure to add the word 'flavor' to avoid legal risks."

However, some careful netizens have noticed that it is easy to ignore some facts if they only look at the theme of the report and not the details of the article. "the ingredients of mango dragon fruit and pineapple passion fruit are grape juice." This is too much of a sheep's head selling dog meat. "

It is reported that Starbucks issued a statement on the same day reiterating that the allegations in the complaint were "inaccurate and groundless" and said it would defend the allegations.
