As we all know, some people drink coffee because it is delicious, some people drink coffee to refresh their lives, and some people drink coffee to help them better. Mm-hmm...
A number of past studies have shown that drinking coffee in moderation over a long period of time does bring a variety of health benefits. According to Daily Coffee News, a recent study in the journal Nutrients shows that drinking coffee has a positive effect on improving the quality of life of patients with irritable bowel syndrome.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most common functional gastrointestinal disease, which is common in diarrhea, abdominal pain or abdominal discomfort, accompanied by high-frequency defecation habits. It is understood that IBS affects 510% of the world's population. In China, the incidence of irritable bowel syndrome is about 7.5%, and diarrhea is the main type.
Many early studies have shown that coffee has a variety of effects on the digestive system, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, but the relationship between coffee intake and the risk of irritable bowel syndrome is not clear.
On November 10, 2023, researchers from Yang Luling Medical College of the National University of Singapore published a research paper entitled "Examining the Association between Coffee Intake and the Risk of Developing Irritable Bowel Syndrome:A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis".

In this study, the researchers analyzed a total of 8 projects, involving a total of 432022 participants. Among them, six studies were from Asia, one from the United Kingdom and one from Africa. By observing the diet and living habits of patients with different irritable bowel syndrome, the relationship between coffee intake and irritable bowel syndrome was analyzed.
The study found that coffee drinkers had a 16% lower risk of irritable bowel syndrome, no matter how much they drank, compared with non-coffee drinkers. It is pointed out that coffee contains caffeine, polyphenols, diterpenes and trigonelline, which may protect the intestine and reduce the inflammatory reaction and spasm of intestinal smooth muscle through its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

In addition, the researchers explored individual differences in the effects of caffeine on IBS patients. According to the details of the article, there may be significant differences in the effects of caffeine on different patients. Although caffeine can relieve abdominal pain and abdominal distension, it has different effects on other symptoms such as diarrhea and constipation. In other words, coffee is not effective in relieving symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.
Nevertheless, this is an observational study and does not prove a direct causal relationship between the two. Individual differences, caffeine tolerance, intestinal flora and lifestyle and other factors may affect the role of coffee.
In their study, the authors wrote, a comparison was made by simply comparing coffee drinkers with those who did not drink coffee. Therefore, some details will inevitably be left out, because the dosage, production method and composition of coffee may affect its final biological effect. At the same time, the study also lacks a standardized method to quantify actual coffee intake.
In summary, the analysis found that some compounds in coffee have potential benefits for the prevention of irritable bowel syndrome and intestinal health. They also encourage more specific studies of coffee drinkers in the future.
