Many people know that sitting for a long time will hurt their health, but in their daily work and life, sitting for a long time is unavoidable. It can be said that it is a "common problem" of most modern people. Some people even sit for more than 8 to 10 hours a day.
According to the 2020 Guide to physical activity and sedentary behavior published by World Health Organization (WHO) (WHO), sedentary behaviors, including those in which people are awake, consume less than 1.5 metabolic levels (MET).
In other words, in addition to sitting for a long time in front of the computer, driving to and from work, playing with your cell phone in bed, and eating on the sofa lasts more than 90 minutes. and the energy consumption is low enough, all belong to the broad sense of "sedentary".
Previous studies have found that sitting for a long time increases the risk of a variety of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, and reduces life expectancy. Previous studies published in the JAMA journal showed that sitting for more than 8 hours a day significantly increased the risk of death from all causes and cardiovascular disease by 20% and 29%.
In addition, a recent study in the journal eClinicalMedicine shows that sitting for more than 6 hours a day increases the risk of 12 non-communicable diseases, including migraine, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, depression, chronic kidney disease (CKD), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, thyroid disease, gout, diverticulum disease and ischemic heart disease (IHD).
From this point of view, sitting for a long time is really bad for your health. But the good news is that new research suggests that the risk of being sedentary can be "offset" by coffee.
Recently, a new study published by a research team from Suzhou University in China in the journal BMC Public Health of the British Medical Council shows that coffee can not only help us wake up, but also help reduce the risk of death caused by sitting.
The team of Professor Li Bingyan of the School of Public Health of Suzhou University analyzed the data of about 10600 adult participants in the National Health and Nutrition Inspection cohort study, according to the Life Times. During the 13-year follow-up period, a total of 945 people died, of which 284 died of cardiovascular disease.
After analysis, the team found that compared with those who did not drink coffee, those who drank the most coffee had a 33% lower risk of death and a 54% lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease.
When data from the combination of sedentary and coffee drinking habits found that compared with people who sat for less than six hours a day and drank coffee, people who sat for more than six hours a day and did not drink coffee had a 58% higher risk of death and a 110% higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease. At the same time, the risk of death from cardiovascular disease decreased significantly with the increase in coffee intake.
Simply put, the association between sedentary time and increased mortality was only found in adults who did not drink coffee, but the association was not observed in adults who loved coffee.
So the study suggests that being sedentary does increase the risk of death, but if you really have to be sedentary, drinking coffee may offset the health damage caused by being sedentary. Of course, drinking coffee + reducing sedentary + moderate exercise will have more health benefits than drinking only coffee.
It should be reminded that a healthy adult should not consume more than 400 milligrams of caffeine a day. For example, a large cup of iced American coffee usually contains more than 200 milligrams of caffeine, so one cup a day is enough, or two cups a day if you don't drink other high-caffeinated drinks. Although coffee is good, it is not suitable to drink too much to avoid excessive excitement, palpitations and other adverse reactions.
