When it comes to "frog beans", it may be strange to many people, because at present the word is so small that it is only mentioned in some coffee beans. Therefore, many people will wonder, what on earth is "frog bean"? Does it describe the appearance of coffee beans?

In fact, "frog beans" refer to coffee beans with Rain Forest Alliance (Rainforest Alliance) certification. After being certified by the Rainforest Alliance, they will get a logo with a little green frog, so they are called frog beans.

The Rain Forest Alliance (Rainforest Alliance, RA) is a non-profit international non-governmental environmental protection organization whose mission is to protect biodiversity and achieve sustainable livelihoods by changing land use patterns, business and consumer behavior. Meanwhile, it is recognized by the International Forest Certification system (FSC).

The organization was founded in 1987 by American environmentalist writer, speaker and activist Daniel R. Katz and many environmental supporters, initially to protect the natural resources of the rainforest, and then began to set foot in more fields as the team grew. And in 2018, the Rainforest Alliance and Intercity International (UTZ) announced a merger.

UTZ is a non-profit, non-governmental, independent certification body based on the EurepGAP (EU good Agricultural practices) standard. The certification body strictly certifies all kinds of high-quality coffee in the world, covering every step of production from coffee cultivation to processing. After the coffee production has undergone an independent environmental, social and economic review, the UTZ will give it a recognized responsible coffee logo.

The new merged institution, called Rainforest Alliance, will issue certificates to farms and forestry enterprises that meet comprehensive standards, that is, Rainforest Alliance Certification. Some of the proceeds from the alliance are also used for the protection of wildlife in tropical rainforest animal reserves and the improvement of workers' living standards.

According to the current certification benchmark of the Rainforest Alliance, the benchmark is composed of three departments: nature conservation, farming methods and regional society, from the protection of forests, water pollution, the working environment of employees, the use of chemical fertilizers, waste disposal and other aspects, there are detailed regulations. To put it simply, it is the traditional farming method of planting in the shade of the original forest without changing the original environment, and is beneficial to the protection of the ecology.

Coffee beans belong to agricultural products, so they can also be evaluated. Only the coffee that has been evaluated and certified can be called "Rainforest Alliance Certified Coffee". The period of validity after certification is 3 years, during which the Rainforest Alliance logo can be printed on the packaging of raw coffee beans. This logo is not only known that this product has been recognized, but also has a great guarantee for the quality of coffee itself, and that the product can have a special sales channel and get priority.

In addition, the rainforest alliance logo is also very special, not an ordinary frog, but a red-eyed tree frog. This kind of tree frog basically lives in a healthy and pollution-free tropical rain forest, which is relatively rare. In addition, frogs are one of the commonly used indicators of the degree of environmental pollution, and the Rainforest Alliance was established to protect tropical rainforests, so frogs were used as a standard in the second year of the Alliance and are still in use today.

At present, there are not many "frog beans" certified by the Rainforest Alliance, mainly because it requires a high planting environment, and not all farmers sign up for certification, so it is relatively rare. In Front Street Coffee, Rainforest Alliance certified coffee beans include Diamond Mountain coffee beans from Emerald Manor in Panama and Blue Mountain Coffee from Clifton Manor in Jamaica.

Clifton Manor is currently the only estate in Jamaica with "Tropical Rainforest" certification. The Blue Mountain No. 1 coffee of Front Street Coffee comes from Clifton Manor and tastes nutty and cocoa. The taste is silky and well balanced.
