Where is Mantelin coffee mainly grown? What is the Ateng in Indonesian coffee?
Among the Indonesian coffee, the most famous is Manning coffee, which is popular for its mellow and full-bodied flavor. In Qianjie coffee, Lin Dong Mantenin, an entry-level selection series, and well-known PWN gold Mantenin are very popular.
Mantenin, also known as Sumatran Coffee, is the largest island in Indonesia, which is mainly divided into the Barisan Mountains Mountains in the west and the lowland plains in the east. Arabica varieties are mainly concentrated in the Barisan Mountains in the northwest of the island, Gayo producing areas in Mount Jiayu in Aceh Special Administrative region and Lintong producing areas in Lindong, North Sumatra Province. The Bali Mountains provide a number of volcanic mountains and lakes, which are suitable for the growth of Arabica varieties, while Robusta varieties are mainly grown in the lowlands in the southeast of the island.
Located in the south of Medan, the capital of Sumatra, Lindong is home to the world's largest volcanic lake, Toba, which has many high mountains. The soil in this area is rich in minerals due to past volcanic eruptions, and coffee is mainly grown on hillsides 1400-1800 meters by the lake. Lin Dong Mantenin, an introduction to Qianjie, comes from this. After brewing, it has herbal and dark chocolate flavor, caramel-like mellow taste and high sweetness.
The Gayo producing area of Mount Gayu is named after the Gayo Gayu people, which is located in the mountain area of Aceh Aceh province, which is 1300-1600 meters above sea level. There are also many volcanoes and many volcanic lakes, of which the most famous coffee growing area is Lake Lawar, Lake Laute Tawa. The PWM gold Mantning in front of the street is from the Gayo producing area of Mount Gayu. After cooking, the mouth will have toast, pine, caramel, cocoa flavor, taste rich and mellow, the overall level is changeable, rich, balanced, the finish has a lasting caramel sweetness.
Both of these Mantenin coffees are from Sumatra, Indonesia, and both are made of Ateng. Many people may think that this is a new variety of coffee, but it is not. In fact, Ateng is a Catimor variety.
Only Katim, which is grown on the islands of Sumatra and Indonesia, can be called Ateng. Katim is a cross between the Timorese species Timor and Kaddura Caturra to produce the first generation of F1 hybrid varieties. Katim is code-named Tmur8667, but it still needs to be determined by breeding, so Katim is not a variety, but a breed group with similar lineages.
One of the Timorese species Timor is the emergence of Timor Hybrid on the island of East Timor, which is a natural cross between Arabica and Robusta varieties and belongs to Arabica coffee plants, but it has the disease resistance gene of Robusta species. Therefore, the Katim variety crossed between Timor and Kaddura also has the resistance to leaf rust.
In addition, Kaddura Caturra is a natural mutation of the bourbon species, because it has a single gene mutation in Kaddura, resulting in smaller plant growth. Katim also inherited the characteristics of Kaddura, the overall plant is smaller, can be more intensive planting, so the yield is also higher, and can be planted in lower altitude areas, which is very suitable for the local island-type producing areas of Indonesia. But Katim varieties are vulnerable to Ojo de Gallo mycosis, coffee berries and nematodes.
In fact, Ateng means "small" in Indonesian, so Ateng is the local Indonesian name for the Katim variety. In addition, the Timorese species Timor just mentioned is locally known as Tim Tim in Indonesia. At present, coffee varieties such as iron pickup, Ateng, Tim Tim and USDA are mainly grown in Indonesia.
