Boutique Coffee Competition Cup Of Excellence (COE) is one of the most well-known and authoritative boutique coffee competitions in the world. It was founded by the non-profit organization Coffee Excellence (ACE) in 1999. Coffee competitions and auctions will be held in a number of coffee-producing countries around the world to help local farmers gain visibility and more income for their high-quality coffee.

The competition was first held in Brazil, and the 2024 Excellence Cup held in Brazil this year marks the 25th anniversary of COE's founding in Brazil. Recently, the results of the competition have been announced, and this year is also divided into three groups: sun treatment group (Natural), water washing and honey treatment group (Washed + Honey) and experimental treatment group (Experimental).

In this year's COE competition in Brazil, the winning varieties are different from other coffee producing countries. There are some rare coffee varieties, such as Arara, Topazio and so on. Let's find out what these are today.

Alala (Arara)

The origin of the Alala variety is more complex, which is a cross between the yellow Kaduai Yellow Catuai and the Obata Obat ã variety. According to records, it was first discovered in 1988 by a researcher at the Campinas Institute of Agronomy (IAC) in Brazil, when a more compact coffee tree was found on a farm with yellow fruit, which was resistant to insect pests and leaf rust compared with the red fruit next door, as well as a very high yield.

As a result, the seeds were sent to the Brazilian Coffee Technical support Foundation (Fundacao Procafe) on a variety selection project farm in Varginha in Minas, and then a 15-year breeding and planting study was officially released to farmers in 2012.

At present, because Arara has the lineage of Kaduai and Obata, the fruit of Arara is yellow, which is resistant to drought and leaf rust, compact tree type, dense fruit, high yield and high quality, and is easy to adapt to different planting environments, so it is loved by farmers. In recent years, it has gradually emerged in some international coffee competitions. The variety appeared on Brazil's COE in 2018, but ranked lower, until this year at COE, Arara won the first place in the experimental treatment group and achieved good results in other treatment groups.

Topazio (Top á zio)

Top á zio is a variety bred by the Brazilian Institute of Agronomy (IAC) in the 1960s and 1970s. The new world Mundo Novo variety was crossed with Kaduai Catuai, and the hybrid offspring were backcrossed with Kaduai Catuai.

The purpose of backcross is to make use of the heterosis of hybrids to make the traits of the parents more stably inherited to the offspring through the backcross between the hybrids and one of the parents. The top á zio variety crossed with Kaduai twice in the process of hybridization, so the top á zio variety was similar to Kaduai in the shape of coffee trees and coffee quality, with small plants and high yield. in addition, Topazio had a longer life cycle and yellow fruit.

The variety appeared on the Brazilian COE list in 2018, only 13 places at that time, and won the top spot in the sun + honey treatment group with a score of 91.93 on COE in 2024.
