Recently, according to CBS News on Nov. 20, McDonald's announced on Wednesday that some US restaurants will suspend the use of coffee machines after coffee maker supplier Melitta reported some safety concerns, forcing stores to suspend the supply of some coffee drinks.
In a related statement issued by McDonald's, Melitta recommended that restaurants temporarily stop using some of the $3000 coffee machines to ensure the safety of users. The company found that there may be a defect in one of the parts of the machines, which could cause a steam explosion and damage the relevant parts.
Melitta wrote to restaurant owners earlier this week informing them of potential safety risks in their coffee equipment, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The report quoted a letter to restaurant owners as saying that coffee maker brands urged McDonald's restaurants to stop using equipment until they completed inspections and problem investigations, a process that could take up to three weeks. In response, Melitta said, "our goal is to identify the root cause and provide solutions to make these machines safe to use."
McDonald's has more than 14000 restaurants in the United States, and the chain sells nearly 8 million cups of coffee a day. Although the brand said that stores will continue to supply hot coffee and other products while the equipment is being inspected, the safety concerns of Melitta coffee machines still affect several cities, including Atlanta, Dallas, Pittsburgh, New York and Tampa, Fla., and some stores can only stop selling some coffee products.
As a result, McDonald's said it was currently assessing the scope of the problem and said in a statement that it had moved quickly to suspend the use of defective coffee machines in some stores. In the follow-up, we will also work closely with suppliers to solve this problem as soon as possible and restore the normal supply of coffee products.
It is worth mentioning that some McDonald's restaurants in Canada have had to suspend the supply of coffee drinks because of the safety risks of the Melitta coffee machine.
McDonald's Canada said it temporarily suspended the sale of espresso drinks and hot chocolate in some of its restaurants because of potential problems with parts of coffee equipment proposed by Melitta. Meanwhile, McDonald's Canada says it is working with suppliers to solve the problem safely. However, the Melittta did not answer questions about how long it might take to resolve the equipment problem, so they could not determine for the time being when the coffee supply would return to normal.
At present, local Canadian apps show that at least 13 drinks are not available in some stores, such as lattes, cappuccinos, mochas, hot chocolate and so on. Local media said that if users want to buy coffee, they can ask the store whether they have the product they want by using an app or by telephone, and then place an order for it.
