Italy's first female astronaut blasted off early yesterday aboard a Russian spacecraft and successfully reached the International Space Station about six hours later.

Samantha Cristoforetti of the European Space Agency is a 37-year-old captain in the Italian Air Force. She and two other astronauts from Russia and the United States took off from the Baikonur launch site in Kazakhstan in the early morning of the 24th local time on the Russian Soyuz spacecraft; nearly six hours after the flight, they "chased" the International Space Station, which was flying in orbit more than 400 kilometers above the ground, and successfully docked with it.

Space-specific coffee machine launched for the first time

At present, the number of astronauts stationed on the International Space Station has increased to six, reaching the rated number. The six astronauts will work in space for 169 days, complete hundreds of scientific experiments and welcome a number of cargo spacecraft, which will not return to Earth until May next year.

According to reports, in addition to Italy's first female astronaut, there are Italian coffee maker Lavazza and space food company Argotec jointly developed space-specific coffee machines sent to the International Space Station. This space coffee machine weighs about 20 kilograms and is mostly composed of steel pipes, which can work under high pressure.

Cristobriati is not only the first Italian woman to fly in space, she will also be the first astronaut in history to taste authentic Italian coffee in space, the companies said in a statement.

It is reported that in addition to the coffee machine, the three astronauts also took a lot of food into space, including caviar.

"In addition to 15 boxes of 30-gram caviar, there are apples, oranges, tomatoes, and 140 doses of frozen milk powder and sugar-free black tea," the Itar-Tass news agency quoted an ISS crew member as saying.

Astronauts are no longer as in the past, only on nutrition pills and tubular food to fill their stomachs.
