It is not difficult to have a cup of Yunnan coffee, because 99% of domestic coffee comes from Yunnan.

On April 10, the press conference of "Charming Caiyunnan Characteristic Cloud Series" held by the Information Office of Yunnan Province Government kicked off. The first one was Yunnan Coffee.

Coffee cultivation in Yunnan, has a history of 100 years, is the earliest introduction of coffee in China's mainland areas. In 1892, French missionaries successfully planted the first coffee tree in a place called Zhukula in Binchuan, Yunnan Province; in 1914, the border town Dehong area also introduced small coffee from Myanmar for sporadic cultivation. In 2014, Yunnan coffee area has reached 1.83 million mu, output 118,000 tons, planting area, output accounted for more than 99% of the country. Yunnan coffee planting area is distributed in more than 40 counties (urban areas) of 10 prefectures and cities, the main production areas are Baoshan, Dehong, Pu 'er and Lincang, and the planting area and output account for more than 85% of the province.

Yunnan coffee large-scale planting, industrialization development began in the late 19th century. Dehong Prefecture officially took coffee as its main industry for key support and development in 1998. Through 17 years of continuous efforts, by the end of 2014, Dehong Prefecture coffee planting area reached 275,800 mu, production area reached 140,000 mu, coffee dry bean output reached 28,000 tons, agricultural output value reached 616 million yuan, industrial output value reached 800 million yuan. Pu 'er City began to develop coffee industry in 1988. At present, it has become the main coffee producing area and coffee trading distribution center with the largest planting area and highest output in China. The coffee planting area of the whole city has reached 757,000 mu, with 402,300 mu put into production, 39,900 tons of output and a total output value of 1.2 billion yuan. The export volume is 28,200 tons and the foreign exchange earned is 69 million US dollars. Pu 'er coffee has been exported to more than 30 countries and regions in America, Europe, Asia, etc. The industry has benefited more than 251,500 households in 83 towns and towns in 10 counties and districts of the city, driving Myanmar, Laos and other neighboring countries to plant 300,000 mu.

Pu 'er is also the place with the most concentrated scientific research and teaching and the most perfect service in China. National Key Coffee Laboratory, Yunnan Arabica Coffee Breeding Base of Ministry of Agriculture, Coffee Innovation Center of Chinese Academy of Thermal Sciences, Southwest Yunnan Coffee Meteorological Service Center and Coffee Research Center of Yunnan Province Academy of Agricultural Sciences have all settled in Pu 'er. Yunnan Agricultural University's Thermal Cultivation College has long taken root in Pu' er to cultivate coffee talents. In April this year, Yunnan Province Coffee Trading Center was also launched in Pu 'er, marking a key step towards the integration of Yunnan coffee with the world coffee market.

Yunnan coffee is famous for its unique flavor of "strong but not bitter, fragrant but not strong, slightly acidic flavor". The overall quality is better than Brazilian coffee and similar to Colombia Arabica coffee. According to Wang Pinghua, Deputy Director of Agriculture Department of Yunnan Province,"In March 2014, Pu 'er City invited Ted Linger, the world's leading fine coffee and founder of American Fine Coffee Association, to organize Pu' er Coffee Green Bean Competition, 79 Pu 'er Coffee Green Bean samples participated in the competition, and the 18 green beans in the finals scored above 80 points, which fully proved the excellent quality of Yunnan coffee."

However, facing the market, Yunnan coffee industrialization development has a long way to go.

Yunnan coffee is now mostly exported as raw materials. According to media reports, 80% of Yunnan coffee beans are exported abroad, while domestic coffee shops use imported coffee in large quantities; Shanghai, as an international metropolis, although 40% of coffee shops use Yunnan coffee, general shopkeepers do not inform consumers that it comes from Yunnan.

Yunnan coffee companies are trying to change the status quo. At present, coffee enterprises in Yunnan Province have begun to take shape. The primary coffee processing capacity of Yunnan Province exceeds 150,000 tons and the intensive processing capacity exceeds 20,000 tons. Among them, Dehong Hougu Coffee Co., Ltd. has an annual production capacity of 13000 tons of instant coffee powder, which is the largest instant coffee powder production enterprise in China. Xiong Xiangren, chairman of Yunnan Hougu Coffee Co., Ltd., was the first entrepreneur to act. He said: "Yunnan coffee to 2008 is almost still in the initial stage of raw material exports, lack of intensive processing, more lack of famous brand, which seriously hampers the development of Yunnan coffee." In June 2008, Hougu announced that it would reduce and gradually stop supplying raw materials to Nestle, and strive to build the brand of Hougu coffee products, striving to make this "Made in China" national brand go to the world. In 2013, Hougu Coffee became the first coffee brand in China with "China Famous Trademark".

It is reported that China is one of the countries with the fastest growth in coffee consumption in the world. At present, coffee consumption is 90,000 tons, and it is growing at a rate of more than 20% every year, far higher than the world's growth level of 3%. The market space derived from this new engine of the world coffee industry provides great opportunities for high-quality Yunnan coffee. Yunnan agricultural department predicts that by 2020, coffee planting area in Yunnan Province is expected to reach more than 2.5 million mu, with an annual output of 200,000 tons of green coffee beans. Hougu Coffee will build another 20,000 tons coffee production line, which is expected to be completed and put into operation by the end of 2016, when Hougu Coffee will become the largest instant coffee producer in Asia.

About Yunnan coffee industry, Xiong Xiangren, chairman of Hougu Coffee Co., Ltd., once said: "From elegant white flowers to mature coffee fruits, we must go through peeling, fermentation, drying, shelling, roasting, grinding, brewing, and finally get a cup of mellow coffee. "Is that what you mean?"

What's up? Have a cup of Yunnan coffee!
