Women who drink coffee regularly have a lower risk of uterine cancer, according to a new study in Japan.

The study, led by Japan's Ministry of Health, involved 54000 women aged 40 to 69 in nine prefectures, including Iwate and Osaka. The longest follow-up period was 15 years, during which 117 women developed uterine cancer.

Researchers at the National Cancer Center of Japan divided the women into four groups according to how much they drank coffee, and the researchers found that women who drank more than three cups of coffee a day were 60% less likely to develop uterine cancer than those who drank less than twice a week. "Coffee may play a role in lowering insulin levels, lowering blood sugar levels and regulating women's hormonal activity, thus reducing the risk of uterine cancer," the team said. "

At the same time, the team also studied the effect of drinking green tea, but found no link between drinking green tea and uterine cancer.
