Caffeinated energy drinks or "toxic"
Australian researchers have found an increase in the number of cases of discomfort caused by drinking caffeinated energy drinks.
The study, jointly conducted by the University of Sydney School of Medicine and the New South Wales Toxicology Information Centre, was published in the 16th issue of the Australian Journal of Medicine.
Health problems caused by the "toxicity" of caffeinated energy drinks in Australia are becoming increasingly serious, according to the study.
Data show that in 2010, 65 people developed "adverse reactions" after drinking caffeinated energy drinks. In 2004, the number was 12.
A total of 297 calls for help were recorded between 2004 and 2010, the researchers said. they developed physical "discomfort" due to drinking these caffeinated drinks, including symptoms such as palpitations, mood disorders and stomach discomfort, and 20 people developed severe symptoms such as spasms or hallucinations. Of all those who asked for help, 128 needed medical treatment.
The researchers suggest that caffeinated energy drinks should be sold and marketed with health warnings and a Toxicology Information Center hotline.
The medical director of the Toxicology Information Center said: "how much caffeine is in these drinks, how much they can buy at a time, and how old they should be at the time of purchase." (Xinhua News Agency)
