A total of 297 calls for help were recorded between 2004 and 2010, the researchers said. they developed physical "discomfort" due to drinking these caffeinated drinks, including symptoms such as palpitations, mood disorders and stomach discomfort, and 20 people developed severe symptoms such as spasms or hallucinations. Of all those who asked for help, 128 needed medical treatment.

The researchers suggest that caffeinated energy drinks should be sold and marketed with health warnings and a Toxicology Information Center hotline.
