What is Direct Trade Coffee?

Direct trade coffee is coffee roasters buying directly from growers, interweaving traditional middlemen, buyers and sellers, and also organizing use of terms such as fair trade and bird-friendly control certification. Proponents of direct trade, for example, say their models are best because they establish mutually beneficial and respectful relationships with individual producers or cooperatives in coffee producing countries. Some roasters do this because they are unhappy with third-party certification schemes, while others want more control over coffee quality, social issues, environmental issues, etc.

Some bakers use "direct trade" in a more specific way. Headquartered in Chicago, the company, Intellectual, roasts coffee and sells it by mail, in addition to operating a cafe, has registered the trademark of long-standing Intellectual Direct Trade to promote its direct business relationship with growers. Counterculture Coffee, another roaster, was founded in 2008 and it calls it Counterculture Direct Trade Certification. Fairtrade, like counterculture, sets the minimum price it pays, but it also sets standards for quality. Also different are Fairtrade certification, counterculture not requiring growers to cooperate, resentment some independent-minded, successful growers demanding part of it.

Direct trade refers to the trade between two countries when goods are exported directly from the producer country to the consumer country, and the consumer country directly imports goods from the producer country, that is, the trade is directly completed by the importer and exporter countries.
