Peru's agricultural exports increased by 16.6% in the first quarter.
Peru's agricultural exports rose 16.6 percent to 915.6 million U.S. dollars in the first quarter of this year, up 130.1 million dollars from 785.5 million dollars in the same period last year, according to figures released by Peru's Ministry of Agriculture.
According to a report issued by the Economic Statistics Institute of Peru's Ministry of Agriculture, the increase in agricultural exports is partly due to the increase in the prices of the main export products, such as asparagus (19.1%), mangoes (437%), artichokes (14.6%), coffee (8.5%), condensed milk (14.9%) and fresh grapes (2.7%). On the other hand, exports of agricultural products also increased, such as coffee (73.1%), fresh grapes (25.7%), edible livestock and poultry products (29.1%), condensed milk (38.6%) and bananas (9.7%). At the same time, exports of mangoes (-33.2%), asparagus (-9.7%) and artichokes (-3.1%) declined.
Traditional agricultural products accounted for 17.3 percent of total agricultural exports in the first quarter, with exports reaching $158.7 million, up 60.2 percent year-on-year. Coffee accounted for 91.9% of the export value of traditional agricultural products, and the export volume increased by 73.1% year-on-year, an increase of 14,000 tons; the export volume increased by 87.7%, an increase of 68.2 million US dollars.
Exports of non-traditional agricultural products reached 756.9 million US dollars, accounting for 82.7% of total agricultural exports, up 10.3% year-on-year. Fresh grapes (29.1%), condensed milk (59.3%), fresh asparagus (13.3%), frozen asparagus (64.7%), edible livestock products (34.1%), bananas (17.5%) increased significantly. In addition, fresh avocado (135%), vegetable seeds (783.7%), other fresh fruits (321.7%), malt beer (255.6%) exports showed great vitality.
Of the 123 overseas markets for Peruvian agricultural exports, the United States accounted for 22.6 per cent, followed by the Netherlands with 13.4 per cent, Colombia with 6.7 per cent, Germany with 5.9 per cent, Spain with 5.5 per cent and Ecuador with 5.3 per cent. Peru's agricultural exports to these countries account for 59.6 per cent of total exports.
