According to the Korean Coffee White Paper released on the 20th by Seoul Coffee Show, South Korea's largest coffee exhibition, 76 percent of South Koreans drink an average of more than two cups of coffee a day, and seven out of every 10 Koreans make coffee at home.
The Seoul Coffee Show surveyed 1076 business people and viewers who participated in the Seoul Coffee Show and the World Coffee leaders Forum last year. When asked how many cups of coffee they drank a day, 36% of the respondents said they drank an average of 2 cups, 25% of the respondents said they drank 3 cups, and many (15%) drank more than 4 cups a day. 76% of the respondents drank more than 2 cups of coffee a day.
When asked about the criteria for choosing a coffee shop, as many as 61% of people replied that it was the taste of coffee, followed by price (20%), traffic accessibility (13%) and side meals (5%).
With the growth of coffee consumption, more and more people are making coffee at home. Among the respondents, 71% made coffee at home. Among them, those who have brewed coffee at home for 3 months to 2 years account for 40% and those who have been at home for more than 4 years account for 19%.
Seoul Coffee Show analysis believes that this shows that brewing coffee at home is not only a short-term fashion, but will also lead the mainstream trend of the coffee industry this year. Among those who brew coffee at home, there is no shortage of people who have professional knowledge of coffee. 79% of them have learned espresso and hand-brewed coffee, and 3% are qualified as coffee tasters.
In contrast to the growing coffee market and the popularity of coffee, South Korean baristas are not treated well. 40% of baristas earn between 1.5 million won and 2 million won (about 8155 to 10874 yuan), 34% earn less than 1.5 million won, and only 16% earn more than 2.5 million won a month.
