The price of Australian takeout coffee is rising three times faster than CPI.
The latest survey by coffee maker Gilkatho shows that the price of coffee is rising rapidly, but it has not stopped Australians from craving cappuccinos. Although the international price of coffee has fallen, the price of take-out coffee drinks has risen three times faster than CPI, and the price of a cup of takeaway coffee in Australia has never been higher. Over the past year, the national price of take-away coffee has risen by 4.2%, consumer prices have risen by 1.2%, and food inflation has been minus 3.2%.
According to the latest regular survey by coffee maker Gilkatho, the average price of coffee is A $3.87 in Perth and A $3.28 in Sydney. Perth is the most expensive city for Australian coffee takeout. Sydney is the cheapest city for coffee. The average price of a cappuccino in Perth is 18% higher than that in Sydney. The average price of Perth takeout coffee is significantly higher than that of Brisbane, which is A $3.47, followed by A $3.44 in Adelaide, A $3.38 in Canberra and A $3.36 in coffee-loving Melbourne.
The Coffee International Composite Index shows that the international price of coffee was $2.10 per pound in July 2011 and $1.59 per pound in July 2012, compared with a significant drop in the price of coffee beans. Despite high takeout prices, Australia is expected to reach a per capita coffee consumption level of 2.95kg in 2012, up from 2.7kg in 2009.
