Honduran coffee exports achieved good results in the first five months of this year.

According to official sources, in the first five months of the 2016-2017 harvest year, the total value of Honduran coffee exports reached 451.37 million US dollars, an increase of 52.5% compared with the same period of the previous year, and an increase of 28.8% in volume.

According to the Honduran Coffee Association (Ihcafe) report, from October 1 last year to February 28 this year, Honduras exported a total of 3.09 million quintals of coffee, compared with 2.4 million quintals in the same period last year.

The Ihcafe report notes that rising international prices are the main reason for the sharp increase in the total value of coffee in Honduras. Coffee is one of Hong Kong's main export products.

In the first five months of the year, the international price of coffee reached an average of $145.75 per quintal, compared with an average of $125.07 in 2015-2016.

According to data provided by Ihcafe, Germany, the United States and Belgium were the main importers of Honduran coffee during the period in question, accounting for 68.17 per cent of total exports.

Honduras expects to export a total of 9 million quintals of coffee this harvest year, which ends at the end of September, and earn a total of $1.5 billion in foreign exchange for the country. 1060308
