With the coming of the hot summer, the peak season of iced coffee has also arrived. What should you do if you choose to make your own iced coffee at home? If you want the coffee to remain intact, you'd better not throw ice cubes into the hot coffee.
You can also make coffee in the usual way, wait for it to cool, and then put it in the refrigerator. You can do this the night before so that you have iced coffee the next morning, which is better than throwing ice into hot coffee.
A better way is to directly drop the hand-made hot coffee into a heat-resistant pot with ice to lock in the aroma of the coffee and adjust the ratio of ice to coffee according to the intensity you like. This practice is called "Japanese iced coffee", which takes a long time and has different flavors. As it may take 12 hours, many people will choose to buy it in a coffee store.
Is iced coffee more expensive than regular coffee?
Unless the boss doesn't care about making a profit, iced coffee is usually more expensive than hot coffee, especially considering the cost of time and space.
Selling iced coffee can make coffee shops make some money, but the time and effort taken by iced coffee limits the profit, and the cost is relatively high.
Iced coffee needs ice and an ice maker. Iced coffee is usually served in plastic cups, which is more expensive than paper cups. Guests usually drink iced coffee through straws. Jason Scherr, the boss of Think Coffee in New York, says iced coffee costs about 20% more when things like cups and straws are added together.
The owner of another coffee shop said that the cost of iced coffee varies depending on the way it is served, and the cost of prettier cups and paper towels is higher, but most owners take these costs into account when setting the price of their drinks.
The weather also matters. A pleasant spring is of great help to the coffee shop. Joe Rubinstein, the boss of Joe Coffee, says that in a warm spring, business will be 10% better than usual and may earn $200-400 more.
Does drinking iced coffee really cool you down? This is controversial, and many studies have asked subjects to drink cold drinks, measure the temperature of rectal thermometers, and claim to observe a cooling effect.
But Dr. Dr Ollie Jay of the University of Ottawa believes that when you drink a cold drink into your stomach, it is close to a rectal thermometer. He thinks the cooling effect may be exaggerated because the temperature nearby will be lower than other parts.
Jay took a different approach. He monitored the metabolic rate. In addition to rectal thermometers, he also put eight thermometers in various parts of the body, and one was inserted into the esophagus. He concluded that hot drinks trigger sweating, sweat cools the body, and cold drinks turn off the trigger. In some cases, the cooling effect of sweating from hot drinks is better than that from cold drinks.
Does iced coffee have more caffeine? This varies with different brewing methods. According to the New York Times, cold coffee is usually less caffeinated. Caffeine dissolves more easily in boiling water, so higher temperatures release more caffeine.
