Silver "fish" test in water 33% instant coffee is highly toxic

The overall safety of samples produced in Southeast Asia is poor, and there is no direct relationship between coffee price and safety quality. Du Weiyi, chief executive of silver in the water, said the test concluded that the toxicity of instant coffee samples came from a large number of additives and that excessive intake might increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

In May this year, Silver in the Water's small Fish testing platform randomly purchased a total of 30 instant coffee products from 11 brands in supermarkets and online shopping platforms in Hong Kong. using the embryotoxicity test techniques of "transgenic mackerel" and "zebrafish", it was found that 13 samples were rated as green fish (excellent), seven as yellow croaker (basically qualified) and ten as red fish (to be improved). That is, 33% of the samples failed the test. It was found that the performance of the samples with Southeast Asia as raw material origin was worse than that of other regions, with only three samples of excellent quality and the remaining seven basically qualified and needed to be improved, while those from Europe and the United States did not fail.
In the acute toxicity test, the toxicity level of instant coffee was 1.8 times higher than that of chain coffee. Du Weiyi said that coffee accounts for only 5% to 9% of the ingredients of instant coffee, and 90% of them are food additives, such as cream, emulsifiers, etc., or the cause of high average toxicity. Cream is composed of a variety of different ingredients, including hydrogenated fat and trans fat. Excessive intake will increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Members of the public are urged to pay more attention to the composition list and nutrition standards on the package when shopping, and choose products with less additives and sugar.
